The problem seems to be the modem, it is a BT Voyager 100 USB
ADSL/Modem - so it was USB.

Oh.
:-(

The power and DSL lights were on but not the Data light.

Maybe the Drivers for it are playing up?

I would suggest though (& I'm sure you would agree!) that she just
ditches it (since it's USB) & gets a proper ADSL Modem, with an ordinary
Ethernet Connection, rather than using USB...

I tried fiddling around with the connectors with no success so
I fitted my Draytek Vigor which connected OK, not perfect the data
light flicked on and off a bit but it's generally on.
They are a way from the exchange so the connection was about
700kbps, it may re-train higher I suppose.

Yep, let's hope so! - That's not very good, is it?

I installed Spybot and AdAware both of which picked up some apparent
nasties and cleared them. I also ran cCleaner.

So she is in business but I need a recommendation for an ADSL
modem/router. Sensitivity will be important in the circumstances
and cost is pretty important as well. Any suggestions for a decent
bit of kit at a reasonable price?

Does she want WiFi with it?

WiFi ones don't actually cost all that much more than ADSL Modem/
Routers without WiFi in, these days.

I have recently Setup (very easily!!!<g>) a ZyXel Prestige 600 Series
one (sorry, I can't remember the exact Model Number, but I can look
it up, if you want it) They are being Sold by Curry's/Dixons/PCWorld,
for 39.95.

It was a doddle to Set up (& that was even with an AOL ADSL Broadband
Connection!)

& it works great!
I haven't had to go back to her to sort any probs out, cos she hasn't
had any probs with it.
:-)
