I then decided to use my new Yahoo email address for normal
email - and then my problems started.

Some of the Free Yahho0 Accounts don't (or didn't) allow POP3 Access -
you had to access it via their WebSite - but I think it's changed now.

I set up a new Mail Account in OE using server/port info I found
somewhere on the Yahoo system - but subsequently couldn't find again.
From memory it involved reasonably standard pop and smtp server names
but SSL port numbers.

Make sure that Info applies to the type of Yahho Mail Account that
you have.

Are you *sure* it uses SSL for *POP3*? (Incoming Mail)

Usually that's used for SMTP - Outgoing Mail (though some firms do
also use it for POP3

I have now refound those instructions. They are on //help.yahoo.com (ie
not .co.uk)but having read further they are contradictory.
Under 'Client Settings' they advise 'Use SSL,port995' for incoming and
'Use SSL,port465,use authentication' for outgoing.'
Under Settings for OE under Accounts/Properties/Advanced it says
'ensure that you have NOT selected "This server requires a SSL
Connection" under the Incoming(POP3) or Outgoing (SMTP) Port
settings'.
So I don't know what to make of that and I have not yet found the
equivalent Help page in Yahoo.co.uk.

Either way it doesn't seem to be the cause of the current problem
since I have tried it both ways round (ie with SSL and associated
ports and without SSL and normal ports) and I get exactly the same
perpetual demand for password plus error codes 90/92 as per error
message posted before/below.

Anyway having put this info from Yahoo into OE I tried to use it
by pressing Send/Receive.I immediately got a Logon/ID box demanding
password (which is already there as a line of blobs but I supply
again).Press enter and it immediately reappears ad nauseam.
Press cancel and you get an error message as follows

Great!
That will help suss it out!
:-)

There was a problem logging onto your mail server.
Your Password was rejected.

Well, often it just means it wasn't able to Authenticate for some
reason - you may well have used the right UserName & PassWord, but
check that anyway

Account: 'pop.mail.yahoo.co.uk',
Server: 'pop.mail.yahoo.co.uk',

Apparently that *is* the correct Server Name.

Protocol: POP3,
Server Response: '-ERR Error logging in. Please visit
http://mail.yahoo.com',
Port: 995,

Hmmm...
Are you sure it's s'posed to be Port 995? - Normally that's for
Authenticated SMTP - but anyway, you would normally use your normal
ISP's SMTP Mail Server & not Yahoo's, for *Sending* Mail - that's
just an aside.

Try Changing the Port Number (on the Advanced Tab of the Account
Properties in OE) to the normal POP3 Port Number 110.

Secure(SSL): Yes,

& try UnTicking the "Use SSL" (or use SPA - Secure PassWord
Authentication) Option

As above I have tried that and get exactly the same error codes below.

Server Error: 0x800CCC90,
Error Number: 0x800CCC92

Those are actually OutLook Express Error Codes.
You can look them up on the M$KB (micro$oft Knowledge Base) here...

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=208814

<quote>
0x800CCC90 POP3_RESPONSE_ERROR Client response invalid.
0x800CCC92 POP3_INVALID_PASSWORD Password not valid for account.
</quote>

So, it *might* be that yo uhave got the wrong PassWord/UserName
(or the wrong format of the UserName)

This is all with 'Logon using SPA' unchecked.
If you do check the SPA box and try again you don't get the
recurrent password demand

That only comes up, cos Authentication failed, for some reason.

but you do get a different error message as follows

Unable to logon to the server using Secure Password Authentication.
Account: 'pop.mail.yahoo.co.uk',
Server: 'pop.mail.yahoo.co.uk',
Protocol: POP3,
Server Response: '-ERR popgate unknown command',
Port: 995,
Secure(SSL): Yes,
Server Error: 0x800CCC90,
Error Number: 0x800CCC18

Again, look on the M$KB, to see what that Error is...

<quote>
0x800CCC18 SICILY_LOGON_FAILED Logon attempt failed
</quote>

"Sicily" means OE is using SPA

And really that's as far as I have got.I have tried all the
permutations and combinations in the account properties that
I can think of - but I always get one or the other of the above
two error messages.

Try changing the Port Number to the normal POP3 Port - 110

Also check (& double check)_ the UserName you are Logging on with.
(some eMail Servers expect you to only use the bit before the "@"
& others expect you to include the bit after the "@" as well.

I have tried both and it doesn't make any difference.

& try Loggin in to their WebMail/User Pages, with that same UserName
& PassWord.

I have tried that and I do get into the WebMail/User pages ok with the
same UserName and Password that won't work from OE

<snip>

In addition I have tried to send and receive emails to and from my
Yahoo email address to and from my normal ISP email address.
When I send email from my Yahoo address to my ISP address (but using
my ISP outgoing server) they turn up ok in my OE inbox.ie I can send
emails from my Yahoo email address despite all of the error messages
above.
When I send email from my ISP email address to my Yahoo address it
goes out of my Outbox ok but it never turns up in my Inbox.
However if I look in my inbox on Yahoo webmail I find it sitting
there.
I don't know what to make of that but I'm hoping you will.

It's just a prob wit hthe way yo uhave Set up the Account in OE.

I'm sure you're right. So far I haven't been able to find out what it
is.I'm hoping the extra info above will help you to help me.
(or it might be that the particulatr type of Yahoo email Account
that yo uhave doen't allow3 POP3 Access - check that on their
Help/Support Pages)

I've been so busy doing these technical trials and reporting the
results above - I haven't had chance to do that yet.But I will.
Very many thanks as always.
