Following the thread several days ago about Freecycle system/
groups - I did signup to my local Freecycle group - which you do
by signing up to Yahoo groups - in the process of which you have
to get a Yahoo Account ID plus Password plus email address.
Yep - it's a bit silly that the Freecycle Organisation uses a Yahoo
Groups Mailing list, isn't it?
:-(
<snip>
I then decided to use my new Yahoo email address for normal
email - and then my problems started.
Some of the Free Yahho0 Accounts don't (or didn't) allow POP3 Access -
you had to access it via their WebSite - but I think it's changed now.
I set up a new Mail Account in OE using server/port info I found
somewhere on the Yahoo system - but subsequently couldn't find again.
From memory it involved reasonably standard pop and smtp server names
but SSL port numbers.
Make sure that Info applies to the type of Yahho Mail Account that
you have.
Are you *sure* it uses SSL for *POP3*? (Incoming Mail)
Usually that's used for SMTP - Outgoing Mail (though some firms do
also use it for POP3
Anyway having put this info from Yahoo into OE I tried to use it
by pressing Send/Receive.I immediately got a Logon/ID box demanding
password (which is already there as a line of blobs but I supply
again).Press enter and it immediately reappears ad nauseam.
Press cancel and you get an error message as follows
Great!
That will help suss it out!
:-)
There was a problem logging onto your mail server.
Your Password was rejected.
Well, often it just means it wasn't able to Authenticate for some
reason - you may well have used the right UserName & PassWord, but
check that anyway
Account: 'pop.mail.yahoo.co.uk',
Server: 'pop.mail.yahoo.co.uk',
Apparently that *is* the correct Server Name.
Protocol: POP3,
Server Response: '-ERR Error logging in. Please visit
http://mail.yahoo.com',
Port: 995,
Hmmm...
Are you sure it's s'posed to be Port 995? - Normally that's for
Authenticated SMTP - but anyway, you would normally use your normal
ISP's SMTP Mail Server & not Yahoo's, for *Sending* Mail - that's
just an aside.
Try Changing the Port Number (on the Advanced Tab of the Account
Properties in OE) to the normal POP3 Port Number 110.
Secure(SSL): Yes,
& try UnTicking the "Use SSL" (or use SPA - Secure PassWord
Authentication) Option
Server Error: 0x800CCC90,
Error Number: 0x800CCC92
Those are actually OutLook Express Error Codes.
You can look them up on the M$KB (micro$oft Knowledge Base) here...
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=208814
<quote>
0x800CCC90 POP3_RESPONSE_ERROR Client response invalid.
0x800CCC92 POP3_INVALID_PASSWORD Password not valid for account.
</quote>
So, it *might* be that yo uhave got the wrong PassWord/UserName
(or the wrong format of the UserName)
This is all with 'Logon using SPA' unchecked.
If you do check the SPA box and try again you don't get the
recurrent password demand
That only comes up, cos Authentication failed, for some reason.
but you do get a different error message as follows
Unable to logon to the server using Secure Password Authentication.
Account: 'pop.mail.yahoo.co.uk',
Server: 'pop.mail.yahoo.co.uk',
Protocol: POP3,
Server Response: '-ERR popgate unknown command',
Port: 995,
Secure(SSL): Yes,
Server Error: 0x800CCC90,
Error Number: 0x800CCC18
Again, look on the M$KB, to see what that Error is...
<quote>
0x800CCC18 SICILY_LOGON_FAILED Logon attempt failed
</quote>
"Sicily" means OE is using SPA
And really that's as far as I have got.I have tried all the
permutations and combinations in the account properties that
I can think of - but I always get one or the other of the above
two error messages.
Try changing the Port Number to the normal POP3 Port - 110
Also check (& double check)_ the UserName you are Logging on with.
(some eMail Servers expect you to only use the bit before the "@"
& others expect you to include the bit after the "@" as well.
& try Loggin in to their WebMail/User Pages, with that same UserName
& PassWord.
There are clearly quite a few Silversurfers involved in this
Freecycle system.
Have any of them tried to use the Yahoo email address and with
what results.
I haven't tried it (cos it uses a Yahoo Groups Mailing List).
But I've had plenty of expereience ssussing out all sorst of
eMail/Login probs, with lots of different email Accounts.
Or is it nothing to do with Freecycle and my errors in trying
to set up a new/multi email account.
It's just a prob wit hthe way yo uhave Set up the Account in OE.
(or it might be that the particulatr type of Yahoo email Account
that yo uhave doen't allow3 POP3 Access - check that on their
Help/Support Pages)
All comments/advice gratefully received.
See above.
:-)
