My PC has been playing-up the last couple of days: re-booting when
I am reading posts and BSOD.

What is the actual Error message (the text of the Error & the Number
of it) in the BSoD (STOP) Error Message?
This is what it showed:

IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
Lots about recently installed programmes .....
Techical information:
**Stop: 0x0000000A (OxE5000018,Ox00000002, 0x00000001,0x804E4326).
It comes unexpectedly - often when reading posts. Perhaps a couple of
times a month or so.
It has only started to re-boot the last day or so but not always with
the BSOD.

If it ReBoots before you get a chance to Read the Info on the BSoD,
then you need to diable the Option which is Set to make it ReBoot.

Go to System Properties, (in Control Panel or RightClick My Computer>
Properties), switch to the "Advanced" Tab & Click the [Settings...]
Button in the "Startup & recovery" section, then UnTick the Option...

[ ] Automatically Restart.

(& while you're there, UnTick [ ] Send an Administrative Alert,
but leave [/] Write an Event to the System Log)

I have done as you say now pmj and will let you know if it happens
again.

That way, you can see the Info on the BSoD, when you get one & also
look in the Event Log, for more Info.
Have a look in there anyway, cos it will have some Info about the Disk
Errors.

I have done disk clean-up then went to defrag but this is the
message I got
http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/thisone/defrag - I could not find how
to get to Chkdsk or Scandisk
I did put each one into the Run box but nothing happened!

Oh!
Are you sure you spelled it right?
& did you Click the [OK] Button? (or Press the [Enter] or [Return]
Key?)
But anyway, as OI says, it's better to Run the chkdsk Command from
in a Command Prompt Window, rather than directly in the Run Box,
so you can see the Output of the Command.

If you are running Windows XP, there isn't a SCANDISK function any
more. It is now CHKDSK. Try clicking START-RUN and typing in
COMMAND and enter.

Actually, it's better to use "cmd", rather than "command" - CMD is the
32 Bit Version, used by WinXP, whereas command is the old 16 Bit
Version.

When the DOS style black window appears, type in CHKDSK and enter.
It will run in read-only mode and show up any file faults. To close
the window afterward, type EXIT and enter. To fix file errors, type
CHKDSK/F instead and it fixes them as it goes.

Actually (& this isn't a "nitpick"! - It's actually very important)...

That should be chkdsk /f (There must be a SPACE, between the command
& the parameter - Switch) & BTW it's not Case Sensitive, so you can
use either CHKDSK /F or chkdsk /f, but make sure to have a Space in
there, otherwise you'll just get a "Command or File not Found".

But some Commands can actually tell that there should have been a
Space! :-)
Even so, it's always a good idea to get in the habit of using the
correct Syntax.

But you can't Run the chkdsk Command with the /f Switch on the C
Drive, (or any other Drive that is "In Use", so you need to Schedule
it to Run at the next Boot.

Done this - had to do it twice then I was able to defrag o.k.

You can also (as JRT mentioned) Run chkdsk from the Properties Dialog
Box of a Drive - on the "Tools" Tab, Click the [Check Now...] Button,
in the "Error Checking" section.

BTW - if you Click the [?] Icon in a Dialog Box like that, when you
aren't sure about something, you get the "Query" Cursor & if you then
Click on an Item in the Dialog Box, you will (usually!) get some more
Info about it.
Also, the Help & Support Center thingy gives plenty of Information
about all of this sort of stuff.
