& so long as you do have a WiFi (or Ethernet) Connection to the
Router OK, you can also have a look at the Router's Admin/Status
Pages, to see what it's saying about the state of the ADSL Line.

It tells me I'm not connected :(

Yep.
:-(

It does seem that you've done pretty much all you can, your end, to
confirm that the prob is with the ADSL Phone Line itself, somewhere.

With that Info, you should be able to get the ISP to sort things out
with BT & get them to make it Fixted.

That will tell you whether or not the ADSL Line is Synched OK
& whether or not it's able to make a Connection through the ADSL
Line to the ISP.
(to do that, when the ADSL Line has Synched OK, it will need the
Correct ADSL UserName & PassWord Entered into it & also it will
need to have the right PPoE/PPPoA Settings & the right VPI & VCI
(Virtual Path Identifier & Virtual Circuit Identifier) Numbers
entered into it.

Look at the "Configuration Summary" Screen (Page) & check that
*all* of those Settings are Correct.
(If you aren't sure what they mean or what they should be,
(or whether they are right or not), Post back with what they
are showing up as & we can help out with those Settings)

Well the settings are all as they were when I last used the router
at my old address. I have changed nothing.

OK.

But I just thought that it might be an idea to check that the Settings
(in the Router) are all correct, ready for when the ADSL Synch thingy
*does* finally Synch properly, with the ADSL Line.

& try ReBooting the Router periodically, so as to get it to Run
through its POST (Power On Self Test) StartUp Sequence - part of
which will be to attempt to Synch with the ADSL Line.

Done that too - several times. I'm wondering if it's worth setting
the router back to as it was when I first bought it

Well, you *could* do that...

By Pressing & *Holding* the ReSet Button at the back of it,
for approximately 5 Seconds, until the Lights go out & it then
ReSets & ReStarts.
(or by accessing the Router's Admin Pages & going to the "ReSet
to Factory Defaults" Page & Clicking the [Reset] Button on there).

But then you definitely would have to Re-Enter all the ISP Connection
(Account) Details (Settings) again.

Bear in mind that a "Factory ReSet" is different from an ordinary
ReSet/ReStart or ReBoot (which doesn't ReSet the Settings)

You would need to Enter the ADSL UserName & PassWord.
& also to make sure that the PPoE/PPoA (Encapsulation) Setting is right.
& that the VPI & VCI Numbers in it are right
& that the "Multiplex" (VC) is Set right.

You can do all of that by either running through the "Setup Wizard"
thingy in the Router Admin Pages, or just Set them all in Manually

& you'd also need to Set your own Admin PassWord again & also Set the
WiFi (WEP/WPA) Security stuff as well.

but loathe to do that until BT have had yet another look at the
telephone connection to my house.

Fair enough.
But it wouldn't do any harm!
:-)

& would also give you something to do while you're waiting!
:-)

Obviously, you do need to make sure that you *do* actually have all
the right Details to hand!

All the Details you need are in the "Welcome" Letter/eMail, that you
got from the ISP, when you signed up for the Broadband Account
(& may well also be in one of the Letters/eMails that they sent when
you arranged for the ADSL Account to be moved to the new Phone Number)
& they are on the ISP's Website as well.

For PlusNet, the Settings you need are here...
http://portal.plus.net/support/broadband/help_and_setup/connections_settings.shtml

& here's some general Info about how to Connect the various bits
& pieces together...
http://portal.plus.net/support/broadband/help_and_setup/general_setup_guide.shtml

& if you need any specific Info about where the Settings are in the
Router (& bear in mind that some manufacturers call those various
different Settings slightly different Names, but you should be able
to recognise them, from the choices that are available), then that
Info is in the Manual/UserGuide for it, which is on the CD, or can
be Downloaded from the Manufacturer's WebSite.

For the 3Com WL-540A WiFi ADSL Modem/Router that you have,
the URL for the User Guide is here...
