They can be useful if you're in a strange area and trying to find your way, it can be difficult to keep up with what the limits are.
I do, mostly, sick to the limits - I remember my driving instructor telling me, (all those years ago), it's a 'limit' NOT a'target'.
On my advanced course I was taught the 'rule of nine' - add 9 to each speed limit, wouldn't get away with it now.
