Good question! I think it all hinges on whether our Navy personnel are
being legally held or not. The UK position is that they are not because
they were outside Iranian jurisdiction when they were arrested. I would
dearly like to believe that, but after the recent revelations about the BA
flight into Kuwait in 1990, and Maggie Thatchers blatant lies to
Parliament at the time, who knows?
Given the sophisticated GPS gadgets that Joe Public can buy, it puzzles me
that the military/government of either country can't (or won't) have proof
of where exactly the boat was since obviously I expect them to have more
sophisticated systems. In other words I believe both sides could prove their
point if they wanted/needed to.
If the UK assertion that these guys were in Iraqi waters is correct then I
think 'reasonable' force could be used to retrieve them. If Iran is right
and they were in Iranian waters then any incursion into Iranian territory
would be illegal and certainly seen as a hostile act. I wasn't there when
it happened so have no way of knowing whose territorial waters they were
in. Twenty odd years ago I would have implicitly and indignantly believed
our governments account of things. Now I'm not so sure. :(
And given Blair's track record over Iraq there's no way I'd believe anything
he said which might just be the words of his * best friend* Dubya :-(
One of the pointers is the Iranian refusal to allow Consular access. There
are really only two possible reasons for this. Either our people have been
ill-treated in some way and the Iranians don't want this to come to light
or, more likely I think, they don't want to reveal their whereabouts for
fear of a rescue attempt. I think the latter is the more likely reason but
quite unnecessary if Iran's contention about where the arrests were made
is correct. It's inconceivable that the UK would be so stupid as to
attempt a military operation inside Iran without conclusive proof that our
personnel are, in fact, being detained illegally
Like the conclusive proof that Iraq had WMDs ? Yep, I'm cynical and
sceptical and quite honestly a bit worried about where this might lead, if
Dubya pulls Tony's strings again :-(

People will forget what you said.
People will forget what you did, but
People will never forget how you made them feel.
