... Oh yes and I made a restore DVD. I remember those used to fit
on floppies ;-)
BTW a question about this new fangled having to make your own
restore disk 'cos it's the first time I've had to do it, up till
now they have been supplied.
Yep most OEM Manufacturers these days seem to be falling in line with
micro$oft's policy of encouraging suppliers of OEM PCs *not* to supply
actual Installation CDs with the Operating System on.
Many firms now offer the facility of burning your own "Restore/Recovery"
Disk
... The box comes up telling you to make the restore disk(s) and
tells you that you only get one chance to do it. What happens if
the disk/DVD is faulty, doesn't burn right or becomes corrupted.
That all depends...
... Does that mean there is no way back ?
It means there's no *easy* way to then Create the same things again.
So can I just copy this back up DVD as a back up back up ? If so what do I
copy it as using Nero?
Some firms Set it up so it's just the *Shortcut* to the "Create
Recovery Disk" Utility that is deleted, once the Disk has been Created.
So that means that you may well be able to Run the actual Utility again,
if you can suss out where it is & what needs to be done to invoke it.
But others remove the actual Utility (& in some cases even the Files
that are Burned to the Disk) when yo uCreate the "Restore/Recovery" Disk!
:-(
But either way, you can always Create your own *Install* CD (though
that won't also include all the OEM-specific Drivers & Pre-Installed
Software & stuff.
You can Create an Install CD from the i386 Folder which is usually
in the windoze Folder, in a typical OEM Installation.
There are plenty of Tutorials around on the Web, explaining how to
Create a (Bootable) Install CD from the stuff in the i386 Folder.
Ah yes the i386 folder, I haven't been as far as looking at that yet :-)
BTW - What Make & Model did you end up getting in the end?
I don't think you told us!
Oh yes I did, in reply to you on 18th February in
news:53r6abF1tq2u5U2@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx and I felt really
neglected when you missed it :-(
Sorry - I dunno why I missed that!
Or if I did see it, I dunno why I didn't reply at the time.
OK...
<quote>
So, what sort did you end up getting?
Remember it's a replacement for my old 2001 ME model( with a 10 GB
HD which never managed to fill ) and only for occasional use.
Oh and it's one of the few I could find which come with a 56k modem
( just in case I ever need one) and it's got built in WiFi of course.
Advent.
From PCWorld (or Dixons/Currys) then?
PC World. I managed to find the one member of staff with the shared brain
cell that day :-) Well apart from having a nice chat with him I didn't need
his brain cell 'cos I knew what I was looking for. I was just a bit rushed
though 'cos XP machines were disappearing.
What actual Model is it?
Intel Celeron M 420 Processor 1.6GHz
533MHz FSB
1MB Cache
Hmmm...
You should have made sure to get an Intel Core Duo Processor...
Not at the price I was budgeting for :-)
(OK, a Core *2* Duo Processor would have been a fair bit more)
But the Intel Core Duo is a much better Processor than the Celeron
M 420 thingy.
However, having said that, even a Celeron M 420 will be a whole load
better than whatever was in any Laptop from 2001.
& will do fine for most purposes.
You're not kidding there, it's better than my first desk top never mind
laptop and that was *state of the art* when I bought it. It wasn't when it
was delivered but that's another story :-)
1024MB RAM
That's a reasonable amount to have.
That was the minimum I was going to get.
60GB Hard Drive
& (like you say) that will prolly be ample for most purposes, though
it's relatively small for a Laptop Hard Drive, these days.
Good enough for an occasional use machine. Anything on it would be
transferred to the desktop/back up HD on my return home.
... DVD ReWriter MultiDrive
& only a Single Layer one? - Not a Dual Layer one?
But you prolly won't ever need to burn or play Dual Layer DVDs on it?
I wouldn't even know a Dual Layer DVD if it slapped me in the face :-) OK
out of interest just when would anybody *need* one?
But be careful if you do any Burning of stuff on your Desktop PC
if you want to be able to use/read the DVDs you make on the desktop in the
Laptop.
Cos doesn't your Desktop have a Dual Layer DVD thingy?
& do you use Dual Layer DVDs in it?
I don't think this desk top has dual layer thingy. If it has I've never used
it.
15.4" Widescreen Display
But what actual *Resolution* is it?
I presume it's the standard WXGA? - only 1280 x 800 Pixels?
Yep, but compared to my old laptop it looks great :-)
I don't know why so many Laptop Manufacturers seem to have hulking
great big (15 Inch or more) Displays but still with such a very low
Resolution?
If they aren't going to have many Pixels on it, why make it so big?
& if it's as big as those things often are (15 or 17 Inch) why on earth
don't they make them with more Pixels (higher Resolution) on them?
Microsoft Windows Media Center
LOL!!!
What was it you always used to say about a PC is for doing things
like eMail & Internet & PC/Computing type things on?
:-)
& not for MultiMedia, such as Music, Videos, TV etc?
:-)
Ah but there is method in my madness you know :-) Apart from the fact that
all the XP ones seemed to be Media Centre ones I was informed by the guy (
the one with the communal brain cell) that having Media centre XP allows an
upgrade to a better version of VISTA and *IF* I'm going to get that free (
for £15) I may as well get the better one :-)
128MB UMA Shared Graphics
& since you don't play 3D type Games on it, that will be fine.
Yep.
It's amazing how much even those very basic specifications are very
much better (& *much* cheaper) than the Laptops of a just couple of
years ago, isn't it?
And anybody wanting XP can get good bargains just now 'cos they are pushing
VISTA. BTW do you know that you can tell by the price in PS World if they
want to shift an item quickly? If it's priced at £xx.97, they want to shift
it, if it's priced at £xx.95 they want to shift it PDQ 'cos a newer version
is about to appear. See what you can learn in P C World when you get talking
to the guy with the brain cell, the one who doesn't treat you like an eejit
:-)
