If they aren't going to have many Pixels on it, why make it so big?
& if it's as big as those things often are (15 or 17 Inch) why
on earthdon't they make them with more Pixels (higher Resolution)
on them?
You often say this - it's so you can actually read the screen!
Yes, I do often say it!
:-)
That's cos I think it's actually very relevant & important ...
But hang on a mo...
I've often heard people say that when they use a higher Resolution
Screen (or Set the Display Resolution to a higher Resolution), that
they don't like it "cos the text is too small"?...
But windoze has plenty of ways (at least 3) to cater for that...
My 19" TFT monitors are 1280x1024 which is a perfect resolution
for reading.
Yep, maybe, nut that (if you have the various display Settings still
Set at the Default Settings" ends up with actually quite large Text,
doesn't it?
I have a Toshiba laptop and an IBM laptop that are both 1024x768. The
IBM has a screen about 1" bigger than the Toshiba and is perfectly
readable, the Toshiba I struggle with.
Yep, so yo uprolly need to adjust the Display Settings, to compensate
for that?
A higher resolution may be fine for pictures/videos but it can be
very difficult to read text.
Yep - but that's *only* if you don't make sure to Set the *Text* Size
to what you want!
Obviously, when the number of Pixels (Resolution) goes up, (for
a given *Physical*) Size of Screen, that means that *Text* becomes
smaller!...
Which is why windoze has those (at least 3) different ways to cater
for & compensate for that!
In the Display Properties, have a look on the "Appearance" Tab...
You can change the "Font Size" there - with a choice of "Normal,
Large & Extra Large" - but that isn't the only thing you need to
look at...
Click the [Advanced...] Button & then you can adjust the Size of
various things in standard Windows, so the stuff isn't too small.
& also (which is something many people don't know about, or don't
adjust) on the Settings Tab of the Display properties, there'
(another) Button labelled [Advanced...]
& on the Dialog Box which that Opens up, it says...
<quote>
Display ---
If your Screen resolution makes Screen items too small to view
comfortably, you can increase the DPI scaling to compensate.
To change Font Sizes only, Click [Cancel] & go to the Appearance Tab
There's a DropDown Box on there with...
DPI Setting:
Normal Size (96 DPI)
Large Size (120 DPI)
Custom Setting...
& you can choose either of the first 2 Settings, or choose "Custom..."
& then you get a DropDown Box with various PreSet Percentages in.
& a "Ruler", which you can Drag along, to Set whatever Percentage
you want & it shows you the Size the stuff is going to be.
& all those 3 Settings apply to the System as a whole & *in addition*
to that, individual Programs also have their own Settings for Setting
the actual Size of the Displayed Text, so you can Set it all to Display
how you want.
The idea of having a higher Resolution, is (as you say) so as to get
better Detail, in Pictures & things, but it *also* enables you to have
Text Displaying at whatever Size you want (& with more accurate detail
in it), whereas if you only have a small (low) Resolution, then there's
no way to get more detail & the Text is just bigger, cos each Pixel
(Dot) that it's made from is bigger, rather than it being made from
more, but smaller Dots.
BTW - I'm not suggesting anybody should ever use anything other than
the "native" resolution of an LCD Display!
Unlike CRT Monitors, if you change the Resolution from the native
Resolution, it will always be less clear.
That's why it's so important to have a Display that has the highest
possible *Native* Resolution, for any given (Physical) Size.
