Can you tell us the Phone Number you found for the NTL
Dial Up Connection?
Ah! sorry I didnt reply to that bit. Of course ill give you
the number.
0800519011
there you are, that was in the field in my dial up connections on
this machine. If I can get back to that part in XP when i connect
up the other machine I'm hoping that Ill be online with it soon.
<snip>Great!
But...
That seems to be (nearly) the same Number (or similar to -
i.e. apart from the last 3 digits) as was originally used by the
NTLWorld Freedom Dial Up Service.
They used:
08005190150
08005190100
<snip>Now, the Number you Posted is only a 10 Digit Number?
& the others I have for NTLWorld are all *11* Digit Numbers...
<snip>So, I think it might be an idea to check that you've Copied the
Number down correctly.
<snip>I just had a look on the VirginMedia (xNTL) Help pages on their
WebSite & they do list the Dial Up number - & it seems that it *is":
08005190100
(note that's an 11 digit number, unlike the 10 Digit number you
Posted above - 0800519011)
http://www.virginmedia.com/help/support/dialup_cat_iassist.php
http://www.virginmedia.com/help/support/dialup_cat_general.php
http://www.virginmedia.com/help/index_narrowband.php
http://www.virginmedia.com/help/index_internet_service.php
So, try it, with any (or all) of those numbers & then make sure
that the number(s) which don't work are removed from the List -
the (built-in) WinXP Dial Up Connection thingy has the facility
to remember several different numbers for each Connection & it can
be set to automatically use an alternative number, if a Connection
attempt fails - & it can also be set to then move that (successful)
number to "the top of the list".
HTH
I (& we all! - or some of us) will be interested to hear how you get
on with it.
Thanks pmj,
Indeed I typed the wrong number down when posting that message.
Ah...
I thought so & was pointing that out, cos I know how frustrating
& annoying it can be if you end up accidentally entering the wrong
number in...
It's the sort of thing where your mind "sees" what it wants to see!
& it can be *very* difficult (even if you read & re-read it several
times) to spot a simple error in transcription like that.
I always suggest Copying & Pasting things like that, when you're
entering something in one place from another place, rather than trying
to type it all in - but obviously, you can't Copy & Paste between
2 different Machines, can you? - But see [*1] Below...
:-)
... I also had copied the correct number onto the ack of my original
NTLword disc. The number was 0800 519 0100.
Yep!
That's the one!
& you can't Copy & Paste from a PC onto the glossy cardboard Sleeve
of a CD, can you? - So you *have* to end up manually writing it down,
in that case.
... I am prone to mistyping and when I think ive done things corrctly,
it isnt always, especially when it comes to copying information or
writing.
Yep.
I know the prob!
It's very easily done!
My recommendation is to always try to Copy & Paste stuff like that,
where ever possible (rather than (re-)Typing it in). But even then,
you often have to be careful (with things like Server Names & UserNames
& PassWords etc,) to make sure you haven't Copied & Pasted things like
the Spaces before & after what you're Copying.
... It is usually more evident when extreme fatigue has set in as it
so often does these days.
Yep.
I can understand that.
So I do reckon it's a good idea to always, (where ever possible) let
the *Computer* "take the strain" - but then to do that you have to
*mentally* remember how to do all the Copying & Pasting etc! - As well
as remembering *that* you can Copy & Paste it, rather than Typing it!
:-)
I often see people laboriously writing stuff down (from the Screen
or Web Page or eMail or something) & then Typing it all back in again,
into a "Text Field" on the Screen or where ever it's needed & then
I try to take a few minutes explaining the virtues of doing that sort
of thing by Copying & Pasting & I like to explain the actual "mechanics"
of how to "Copy & Paste"! - It's surprising (to me at least) how many
people don't know all the various shortcuts to use, when doing things
like Copying & Pasting.
Until they know those things, they often think that it's actually
easier to just (Re-)Type it all in!
But in addition to it not being easier (& it taking longer) typing
it in can lead to errors in transcription, which can be avoided by
Copying & Pasting.
Anyway...
I'm intrigued to know how you did actually get on with it!
Did you manage to Enter the Number you had found into your new
Machine OK?
& did it work (Connect up) OK?...
On a lighter note, I typed in the number taken from my Windoze 98
machine into my XP machine and was connected this evening.
Ah great!!!
That's what I was hoping to hear!
:-)
Glad you got it all working OK.
& have you *Dis*Connected & then ReConnected OK?
& did it remember the right Number OK?
Ill need to tranfer other info into it for my email accounts to work,
as well as my news servers so I can make it 'feel' like this machine,
but faster.
Yep.
[*1]
It might be an idea to Copy & Paste the Info - Server Names, UserNames
& PassWords etc,) into a simple Plain Text File (using Notepad or
Wordpad or something & then transferring that Text File to the new
Machine, so you can then Open up that Text File & Copy & Paste the
Info from it into the relevant Fields in the various "New Account"
Wizards &/or into the "Properties" of the Accounts, so as to (help to)
avoid any transcription Errors &/or Typos.
... Ive put Google into my favorites folder already and my even set
that as my homepage.
Good idea!!!
That's very useful.
:-)
You may find these URLs for Google useful - they are Preset to use
the Advanced Search Page & to return Pages in English & to return 100
Results per page, rather than the Default of only 10 - bung them in
your Favorites as well...
GoogleAdvancedSearch
http://google.com/advanced_search?num=100&lr=lang_en
GoogleGroupsAdvancedSearch
http://groups.google.com/advanced_group_search?num=100&lr=lang_en
All is well that ends well, and thanks for pointing me in the right
direction. Broadband in T minus 8 days. wwWOOOOOSSSHH.!!
Wey Hey!!!
That will be good!
:-)
Make sure that the Installation people supply you with a Cable Modem
that has a standard *Ethernet* (RJ45) Connection, won't you?
& tell them that you don't want or need them to Install any stuff
from any CDs or Disks or anything.
Cos you already have your NTL Account Set up (on the NTL Servers
& System) & you also have it all already Set up on your PC!!!
:-)
So you really don't need anything Installed from any CD.
& with an Ethernet Connection (as opposed to a USB Connection),
there's no need for any Drivers or any "Connection/Dialler" Software
or anything.
WinXP has everything you need already on it, to use a Cable Modem.
& you've already (or will have) got your eMail & News Accounts Set up.
