Now I am going to have another look around so that I know where
to get a cable and a (x)DSL (WiFi (Wireless) Router.
If you live near somewhere (or yo ujust fancy a little Shopping
trip?) It might be an idea to get the Ethernet cable which you know
you will need
The days of shopping trips are sadly in the past - that is why
I look for and order so much on line, but Maplins have a good car
park and PC World are in Team Valley Retail World and parking is
good there too, so I shall start by getting a cable and fitting it.
Yep, good idea!
:-)
<snip>
You can do all this (checking out the Ethernet Connections etc)
*before* you get the Laptop PC, cos all of it will work fine when
you do get the Laptop.
Yep - well I *thought* I had the laptop sussed: have been back and
had another look at the P100-434 spec. and it seems comparable to and
better in parts than the Dell
I haven't had a chance to have a look at that particular Toshiba
Laptop yet.
and unless I upgrade the screen to WUXGA I am not going to get more
pixels and there is no option to upgrade the P100 so I am leaving
decision until Monday so I have 3 nights to sleep on it <g>
I've just had a look at it (on the Toshiba Site)...
http://uk.computers.toshiba-europe.com/cgi-bin/ToshibaCSG/jsp/productPage.do?PRODUCT_ID=125202
& it seems a pretty good one to me!
It's got a decent Processor (Intel Core 2 Duo)
A decent amount of Sheep! - 2048 MB (2GB) RAM
& a fair sized Hard Disk (120 GB)
Etc, etc...
The Screen is very (or relatively) large (17 Inch), but it is still
(like many other Laptop Manufacturers seem to supply) only WXGA+
which is 1440 x 900 that's prolly fine for a lot of purposes though
But it would be nice to have more Pixels on it (which gives better
detail/resolution).
You *can* actually get 17 Inch Screens with as high a Resolution as
1920 x 1200!
:-)
But they are a fair bit more expensive.
No need to get too hung up about the Resolution though - cos for most
purposes 1440 x 900 is prolly OK - though you'll definitely notice the
lack of *Height*, cos it's a (so-called) "WideScreen" Display with an
Aspect Ratio of 16:10
A typical 17 Inch or 19 Inch LCD Monitor has a *very* much "Taller"
Aspect Ratio of 5:4 (much more nearly Square) & has a Resolution of
1280 x 1024 Pixels.
So the Screen on that Laptop is about 160 Pixels Wider, but also
124 Pixels less in Height.
But (unfortunately) these days, most manufacturers do tend to
be supplying those sort of WideScreen Aspect Ratio Displays, which
mean you have to Scroll more to see stuff on the Screen.
They are fine for watching DVDs & Videos on though.
... and time meanwhile to go for the cable and then I hope you still
have the same mobile number because if I unplug the USB and fit the
ethernet and get a black screen I shall be having collywobbles.:-))
Yes, I do still have the same Number.
So by all means call me if you want/need to.
But remember, if when you try Connecting the Cable Modem to the PC using
the Ethernet Cable, you have probs, you can always just take it out
& Revert (Temporarily) to using the USB - cos you won't need to
UnInstall
the USB stuff yet (if at all).
The Laptop will just Connect up to the Router (using WiFi &/or the
Ethernet Connection (if you want) *as well* as the Desktop PC.
That's the job of the Router & why you need a Router to do it all.
I believe you!! and no doubt will find something else to ask about
before very long.
OK - I look forwards to that then!
:-)
