Will someone tell me please.
I have a desktop with Win XP and Cable internet connection.

1. Can I connect a Vista laptop?.

It will depend on whether or not Vista drivers are available for the cable
modem, you need to check their website (or give us a model number in case
anybody here is using one).

Network adapter is Motorola SURFboard SB5100 USB Cable Modem.

2. Can both the desktop and the laptop be used simultanteously?

You could by setting up ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) on the desktop -
but you would then need to find a way of connecting the laptop to the
desktop. It can be done but I think you would find it easier to use a
router.

I expected that I would need a router to use the laptop in another room to
the desktop. What I was wondering was whether I could use the desktop (it
is in the study) and Maurice could use the laptop at the same time in the
lounge. Both of us connected to the internet.

3. At present I have ZA and AVG - will these free security things work
with Vista OS?.

Probably best to check their websites, mind you I down-loaded several apps
that are supposed to work with Vista but didn't :-(

I have used ZA & AVG now for years now but the laptop I am looking at has an
option to have Norton Internet Security 2007 for £25 (there is a note which
says "this software requires a free downloadable update from Symantec to
work with Win. Vista"
Thought I had better do a check with you all and get advice before doing any
deals.

4. My cable modem is Motorola USB - I understand I will need a router to
connect a laptop - should I expect any problems - or is there anything
which I should avoid?

I think that would be the easiest way to do it. Does your modem have an
Ethernet connection or is it just USB? If you let us have a model number
somebody may know or we can check.
