Windows XP Version 5.1 (build 2600.xpsp.051011-1528: service
pack 2)
I used to be able to search for *pictures* that all encompasing
term to find all pictures. But i seem to have *Search Companion*
come up when i try for a search

Yep, but that "Search Companion" thingy should still offer the various
other Options - you *should* be able to tell it to use either "Simple
Search", which gives those choices of:

<quote>
[->] Pictures, Music, Video
[->] Documents (word processing, spreadsheet, etc,)
[->] All files & folders
[->] Computers or people
[?] Information in Help & Support Centre
You may also want to...
[ ] Search the Internet
[ ] Change preferences
</quote>

Or if you choose "Change preferences", you can then Switch it
(via the "Change Files & Folders Search behaviour" Option) to the
"Advanced" View, which gives you the "Manual Criteria" that you
have showing in the Screenshot that you Posted (below)...

... and i can tick date, type, size, advanced boxes and in type
i can only tick for example jpeg types which is not what i want.

So, what happens when you tick the Option that you have showing in
your Screen Shot of:

[ ] Advanced Options

& is there any Option like "Search for other items" ?
(We can't see what's behind the "Handy Tolls" thingy in the Screenshot.)

Now!.... apparently i can change this back to classic type search
(presumably what i want)

No, (I think) what you (seem to) have at the moment is the "Advanced
Options" of the "Search Assistant" Pane.

What (it sounds like) you are trying to get to, is the "Standard Search"
View (of that same "Search Assistant")

... but i need to go into search and click change preferences and
i cant find that anywhere so i am stuckted it seems. Any ideas
anyone
<snip>
This is a screencapture of what i am seeing

Yep.
I reckon you need to try Ticking that "[ ] Advanced Options" Box.
Or the "Search for other Items" thing.

& if that doesn't get you to the bit where you can Set the
"Preferences", try the "New" Button at the top (of the Search Assistant
Pane), just under the word "Search"

Sorry, it's very difficult (for me) to explain what to do, when
I know that if I could actually *see* all of the Window (including,
for example) the bit that is covered up by the "Handy Tools" (Screen
Capture?) thingy, I could Help you out better. - I've seen several
people's PCs with their windoze "Search" thingy get in all kinds of
states & it's always possible to get it back to rights OK, but it's
usually easier (& quicker) to *do* it, than to explain *how* to do it!
:-(

Do you want to get on M$ NetMeeting sometime, so we can suss it out?

In the meantime, can you have a look in the Registry (using Regedit)

Start>Run regedit [OK]

& Navigate down the Tree on the Left to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Search Assistant

Highlight (Select) it & then Expand that Key up & Post back with what
Sub-Keys are in that Key & also what Values are in the Pane on the
right?
maybe a screen shot would help, or just Export the "Search Assistant"
Key & then Open up the File in Notepad & Copy & Paste it into a Post.

(Though the stuff in the "ACMru" (Most Recently Used Lists) isn't what
we want/need to see & there may be quite a lot of Entries in that bit,
so Snip them out, before Posting the Text of it)

In particular, can you see if there's a Value (in the "Search
Assistant" Key) with a Name of:

UseAdvancedSearchAlways

& if so, what is it's Value - the "Data" (& also what its "Type" is)

Don't change anything just yet, though (we're just looking at the mo,
to see where the prob is & what the it's caused by)

HTH
