... I'm asking opinions about something I'm not sure of i.e did she
buy the correct item.

There's no one, single "correct" item.
There are several different ways of doing what she wants (or expects)
to do.

What she bought *will* work, perfectly well.
It may not be the same as the way a lot of other people do it,
(i.e. they may use a combined ADSL Modem & Router) but that doesn't
mean what she has bought is *wrong*.

Apart from anything else it seemed a very cheap price( she said £29)

Yep, that's a good price.

Not because it's the *wrong* thing (or no good), but because that's
the normal sort of price (these days) for a WiFi Router, without an
ADSL Modem in it.

... and that together with what Google told me and the fact that I'd
never heard of the company got me concerned.

What firm did she buy it from?

But don't worry too much.
If she can't cancel the order, or doesn't want to send it back
(assuming it does actually arrive), that Belkin Router is fine.
It *will* work OK, so long as she has (or gets) an ADSL Modem with
an ordinary Ethernet Connection.

She's with BT and AFAIK her modem is as supplied by BT when signing
up for BB.

What sort of Modem is it that she has?
If it's a BT Voyager (GlobeSpan Virata) 105, (which BT & various
other ISPs, such as AOL, PlusNet etc, often supplied with their ADSL
Connections) then that's only got a USB Conenction & it won't work with
the Router she has bought & she'll need to buy another ADSL modem, that
has an Ethernet Connection.

If it's a BT Voyager 205, then that's a very good ADSL Modem & it
has an Ethernet Connection (& a USB Connection) & will work great
with her WiFi Router.

... Does that help as to whether it will have an ethernet connection
or do I need to go and look at her modem ?

The Make & Model Number of the ADSL Modem that she has will tell
you/us what sort of Connection it has.
You don't need to go & look at it.
Just ask her to look at the label on the bottom of it & tell you what
it says on it.

Also, a USB Socket is completely different (Physically, in shape
& size & also electrically in the Signals it uses) from an Ethernet
(RJ45) Socket, so they can easily be told apart.

But if she doesn't have much experience in using that sort of thing,
she may not be able to tell you what sort of Connection it has.

So just get her to tell you the make & Model of it.
