Can I not just download the software

It may turn out to be a quicker & easier way of sussing out the
prob.

Yep.
I would suggest (at least until you have found out more about Virtual
Machines & how they work & what they can do & how useful they are),
that you use (i.e Download & Install) the (Free) micro$oft VPC2007

http://microsoft.com/virtualpc/
<snip>
... I would be most grateful for advice on the very first steps
on how to get started in the virtual machine business.

See above.

Download M$ VPC2007, Install it, Run it & have a look at it.
(When you first Run it, if (since!) you don't already have
a Virtual Machine Set up, it will start the "New Virtual Machine"
Wizard thingy.

I would suggest Cancelling out of that & then looking at the various
Menu Options & Settings (& have a quick look at the Help File)

& if you're wondering why I suggested (this time) using M$ VPC (Virtual
PC), that's (partly) cos M$ VPC2007 has just been Released (& it's
Free).
The previous (also Free) Version was VPC 2004 - I wanted to see that
the new Version was OK, before I suggested it.

& also, cos when I suggested that JayGee tried the VMWare Player,
that was cos he was Running Linux as the Host OS (VMWare Player is
available to Run on both windoze & Linux - & now Apple Mac OS X as
well),
but M$ VPC only Runs on windoze, which is the (Host) OS that you have
& he had Linux & wanted to use that as the Host Operating System.

Parallels would be another good choice - that also runs on all 3
Operating Systems - but it's only available (for Free) as a (Time
Limited) *Trial* Version.

If you decide that using a Virtual Machine is really useful to you,
then it might be an idea to try out VMWare & also Parallels?
So you can see the differences.

On all of them, BTW (including M$ VPC) you can Install virtually
(nearly, I mean!) any Operating System as the *Guest* Operating
System - it's just M$ VPC that only Runs on windoze as the *Host*
Operating System
