I vaguely remember from my history lessons that Britain traditionally (well since Henry Vlll) had an Archbishop of Canterbury then something happened that meant we needed an Archbishop in York.

I remember, I think, that York was cut off and being located in a loop of a river nobody could get in and out and something terrible would happen to people's souls if they didn't have an Archbishop.

Does that make any sense? Can anybody fill in the gaps for me?
