Do any of you good people make use of your Hosts file to prevent
access to unwanted web sites, most of which have a dubious pedigree?

Yep!!!

& a very efficient (& quick) way it is of Blockin gAccess to
various unwanted Servers!!!

Also, I've placed my home page at the head of the list with it's
proper IP address not the loop back address. I haven't noticed any
difference in truth.

There's prolly not a lot of point in doing that, cos your Machine
(& also the ISP you Connect through) will have Cached the DNS Lookup
Reply (IP Address), so it won't take long to look it up anyway.

Also, you would need to make sure to keep the Entry Updated, in case
the actual IP Address of the Server changes.

Yes, I did it as a test to see if it made any significant difference to the time taken to access the web site. If it does I can't see it, but I did think of dropping this to the bottom of the list to see if that added any time, I guess the hosts file is sequentially searched prior to the look up on the DNS server. Clearly this will add an overhead to each and every IP request before the DNS server is involved.

A HOSTS File really is a very efficient (good & reliable) way of
Blocking access to unwanted Servers - but you do have to bear in
mind that Server (Host) Names used for Adverts & things do change
(often the Ad Servers change them in an effort to get around people Blocking them!) so you do need to keep it updated.

& it might be an idea to go through your HOSTS File, looking
for duplicates (& eliminating stuff that no longer exists/applies,
but that's actually quite hard to do).

That's an interesting point, but as I'm not directly in the know about the sites I have in my hosts file (they have been supplied by the spyware companies). I use Spybot Search & Destroy to update my Hosts file for me it would be far too time consuming to add them myself except where I've had a known problem and subsequently added them to the list.
I wouldn't know if they are current or not. I suppose I could clear out my hosts file and let Spybot rebuild it from it's current database that might clear out some of the deadwood. (as they see it!!)
