I eventually obtained a Mercury ADSL Router model ART514CX which
has installed fine (for Internet access) however I am totally unable
to get the network bit working, Both PC's can see each other but when
I try to access either it is denied, The firewalls (Sygate Pro) on
both PC's are configured to allow traffic between the PC's. this PC
is running XP Pro and the other is running 98SE and obviously the
file sharing option on both hard drives is set to share.

Where are you pmj?

I'm here.

But I dunno how much Help I'll be able to be for you, with your
particular prob...

My experience with windoze Networking isn't all that extensive
& the experiences that I *have* had with it have shown me that
sometimes it really is dead easy & it all works OK, just like you
expect it to, but *other* times it can be a real pain in the arse
& a complete nightmare.
:-(

First thing to check (when using WinXP Pro, as opposed to Win XP
Home) is that you have Enabled what they call (in Win XP Pro)
"Simple File Sharing" - that doesn't just mean that you have to
Enable the Folder(s) to be Shared, but that the actual Option called
"Simple File Sharing" is Enabled - look for it in the Folder Options
in windoze Explorer - or on the "Sharing" Tab, in the properties of
a Folder.

Also, make sure that you have the WinXP Logon Screen Set so that you
*do* actually Log on to windoze, using a UserName & PassWord - I know
many people don't bother with a PassWord, but I think you'll find if
you don't have one Set on your Login Account, then that can cause all
sorts of various different probs.

& have a look on the various networking WebSites - such as:

http://practicallynetworked.com/
http://practicallynetworked.com/howto/
http://practicallynetworked.com/support/troubleshoot_index.htm

They've got plenty of "HowTos", "TroubleShooting" & "Tutorials"
on there.

Any probs that you have (with any Version of windoze), you can be
sure that someone else, somewhere has already had the same prob!!!

& all the probs have known workarounds & Fixes.

HTH
