In here?

I don't remember that - if I had seen it, I would have Commented on it.

Could have been longer than a couple of years, could have been somewhere
else but something stuck in my mind about the only completely safe way to
wipe a hard drive costs big bucks.

Have a look at...
http://heidi.ie/eraser/features.php
http://heidi.ie/eraser/faq.php#erase%20hd

That one is the most popular of the readily available ones.
Bu tthere are others.

You've brokted them :-) They both time out here :-(

There are also a lot of Commercial ones, which cost a lot of money.
& many of them come as part of (or include) various other things,
which most people don't need.

Here's a Page that lists several other (Free) utilities to Securely
Delete (Wipe & Overwrite) Data from a Hard disk.

Where the page ? It didn't self destruct did it ?

I've no idea what my local council policy is, I don't even know
if they have a pooter disposal place,

They should have.
& if they don't already have, then they soon will *have* to...

I've never seen it mentioned in any of the info sheet we get.
I'm not saying it's not there just that I (and I suspec the
majority in this area) know nothing about it.

Have a look around for Info on the WEEE (Waste Electrical & Electronic
Equipment) Directive - Google has plenty of Info about it all & the
Government (DTI - Department of Trade & Industry) Site has plenty of
Info about what's happening & when...

http://www.dti.gov.uk/innovation/sustainability/weee/page30269.html#Timeline

& how the Rules are affecting us here, in the UK & as part of the EU

There's *loads* of .PDF Files on there, full of Info all about it,
for you to read!
:-)

Oh thank you, I've got nuffink else to do but read EU directives :-)

But it doesn't matter whether you *do* actually read it or not
:-)

Good.

The rules will still apply, not only to you, but to the Shops
who you buy things from & the Councils who you expect to dispose
of the Rubbish.

Ah, is that the one where stores are going to have to bear the brunt of
disposal of loads of electical stuff and thus put up the price to us :-(

<snip>

Haven't you got a Web Browser on your Machine?
:-)

Yeah but I like a personal recommendation or suggestion ;-)

Most Web Browsersa offer quick & easy access to variosu different
Search Engines, so yo ucan soon find any number of Utilities to do what
you want.
:-)

Yebutt, some are good and some are bad and no doubt some are in between :-)

But see above for some specific pointers to some Utilities & Info
about them.
:-)

See my reply above :-)

... Particularly since I'm soon to pass on my old machine and I thought
formatting and installing would jbex with somebody I trust.

It has nothing to do with whether or not you "trust" them!!!
It's not *them* that are all that likely to go looking for Info, is it?

It's what happens to the Hard Disk, once the PC is disposed of,
that is the problem (also, there's the (separate) problem of what
would happen if they got some Malware on the Machine, which could
easily go looking for Info & pass it on to some 3rd Party, via the
Internet

OK lesson learned but can you recommend/suggest some good free utilities
apart from the one that's brokted here ???:-)
BTW the hard bit now is going to be trying to explain to trusted new owner
why they can't get the old machine until I've got time to wipe the hard
drive. Some people might take that as an insult and be offended, like the
people who are offended when you ask them not to CC your addy to the world
:-(

People will forget what you said.
People will forget what you did, but
People will never forget how you made them feel.
