I don't know what modem/router you're using but generally speaking
flashing is bad unless there is some data throughput. Solid is good
unless there is some data throughput.
It very much depends on which light is doing the flashing.
Rebooting / restarting (disconnect from power count ten reconnect) the
modem/router usually restores the status quo.

I got a filter
online that BT supplied. I am running an extension lead upstairs from the
hallway into my office and the filter is connected directly to the socket
in
my office. At the moment I am running a phone/Fax machine and a credit
card
terminal from the socket with no problem.
Do you think I would benifit from a stronger filter and if so is there
such
a thing available ?

Here is the set up:
Phone line comes into the house via the dining room outside wall where I
have a phone socket and a phone. There is also a BT filter on this
socket.
There is a further phone socket in the hallway and it is from this socket
that I have run an extension line upstairs into my office where it
terminates into another socket. Filter is fitted here also.

Try removing one of these filters.

From this socket
I run my modem - a fax/ phone and a credit card terminal.
when the fault occurs - I have tried disconnecting everything except the
modem but it makes no difference.
Also whenever the fault id present is is accompanied by a noisy line. The
only thing I havnt changed is the extension line.
Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.


BT are cautious over credit card terminals sharing the same line as an
adsl service. I have two clients who do this with no apparent problems
but BT did not recommend it.
Your problem may not be your fault, and it's quite common. It may just
be BT playing silly buggers with the exchange. This MaxDSL is far from
rocket science. In fact it seems more akin to Stephensons Rocket than
anything NASA puts up.

Does your fax work? I tried to send a couple of faxes last week. Failed
miserably until I changed the DSL filter.

Yes the fax works OK - today every thing is fine with a solid light on the
modem. However I am going to have a professionly installed line extension.
Doing this will at least remove any doubt about the line being at fault from
the master socket to the office.
I tried moving the modem a few feet from the TV which is also in the room -
When BT say the exchange is fine , I always have my doubts. As you say it
could be some silly person messing around in there and not telling anybody.

I've only ever seen a direct connection to the socket for a 56k typer modem but that can indeed be via a filter that has had an entry for broadband and another which is a simple extension of the wall socket, which means that anything connected there, phone or fax, is going directly to the socket and not being filtered. ...
