Ah - I see, so you've got it basically Set up then (I said it was
easy to Set up, didn't I? <g> There's just a few things in the Set
up Wizard that sometimes people aren't sure about).

I think I am wrong, I have set up Windows Live Messenger v8 and
managed a chat with Ronita but is this the same as netmeeting.

Ah...
No it's not.
"windoze Live Messenger" is (basically) just the new name for the
latest Versions of M$N Messenger.

It *can* also do some of the Remote Control & Desktop Sharing type
things that M$ NetMeeting does, but it does it in a different way
from the way that NetMeeting does it - it does it using the M$N (now
windoze Live) Messenger Interface.

Some people find that the way it "Integrates" into M$N messenger is
quite good, but others find it's a pain in the neck & not at all easy
& intuitive to use.
NetMeeting has a nice clean & simple, uncluttered Interface, with
different bits (Buttons & Windows) for doing different things,
whereas M$N Messenger tries to do a lot all in the same window.

& it's now just a matter of trying it out?
You'll need to make sure that you can Call out (Initiate a Call) OK
Which is not normally any problem, so long as you make sure your
Firewall doen't Block the Outgoing Connection attempt - NetMeeting
needs to have Outbound Access on TCP Ports 1720 & 1503 to be able to
make a Call.

Will try that out.

& then you'll also need to make sure that you can *Receive*
an Incoming Call Request - that can sometimes be a little bit
more problematical - especially if you are behind a Router -
you have to make sure that TCP Ports 1503 & 1720 aren't Blocked
& are "Forwarded" by the Router to whatever PC you want to accept
the Incoming NetMeeting Calls.

I have a router (firewalled) and Zone Alarm.

Ah, so that means you will have to go into the Router Admin Pages
& find the Page that you can Set up "Port Forwarding" (also known
as "Virtual Servers") - what Make (& Model) of Router are you using?

If we know that, it will Help us give hints, tips & suggestions as
to where to look & how to Set it.

Also, you will need to make sure that your Firewall (on the PC)
is Set up to Allow Incoming Connections on TCP Ports 1053 & 1720
(ZoneAlarm calls that ""Allow Server" - The Free Version of ZA
doesn't allow you to specify Port Numbers.

If you don't Set up Port Forwarding on your Router (& also Set the
Firewall appropriately), then you will not be able to *Receive*
Incoming NetMeeting Call Requests, you will only be able to *Make*
NetMeeting Calls - Though (all the functions of) NetMeeting will
work fine, once a Call is established.

NetMeeting also uses some other Ports (& also uses UDP), but
normally most Firewalls & Routers will allow them, once the call
is Connected OK

Don't worry *too* much if you find that you can Make calls, but
not Receive them - so long as the other people you want to Contact
can Receive them it will work OK.

I think I need a handholding session as I appear to be on the
wrtong track.

Yep, (from what you say below) I think you may be!!!

I mainly use Skype for that sort of thing.

Phones (voice contact) are not possible as I am deaf (very)

Ah.
OK.
My hearing isn't all that good either, but (luckily?) I can still use
Phone (& Headphones etc) OK, so that's what I do.

Obviously, that isn't any use in your situation though, so I can see
that you will need the Text Chat part of any Instant Messaging thingy
& not the VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) part...

Skype does that as well!
:-)

It does Text Chat, just like M$N Messenger & just like M$ NetMeeting
as well as the VoIP stuff.

But what M$ NetMeeting does (which Skype doesn't do) & which M$N
Messenger does do, but in a different, less intuitive & less clear way)
is the "Desktop (& Application) Sharing" (along with the "Desktop &
Application Controlling" for Helping the other person out (or for being
helped) & also NetMeeting has a "WhiteBoard" facility, so you can do
little Diagrams & Drawings etc, so the other person can see them.

I dunno if M$N messenger has a WhiteBoard.

Or maybe someone like Boo, or Sandra, or Noreen or Jackie
or one of the other people who are often use "The Bikesheds"
- M$ NetMeeting - could help you Set it up.

I got Ronita but no answer from Rabbit.

Well, what about using Skype for the Initial Contact?
Do you have Skype?

See above

LOL!
& you, also, "see above" - Skype does Text Chat just as well as it
does Voice Chat!

& it actually does it *better* than M$N Messenger (though most people
who use Skype don't seem to use the Text Chat bit much)

Skype lets you "Bookmark" Text Chats, so you can have different sort
of "Topics" & you can continue with them in another Session.

If not, why not just try calling me on NetMeeting?

I would like too. Where do I find NetMeeting?
Regards Jaygee

Start>Run conf [OK]

Or just Click on a "callto://" Link

That Starts it up & when you Run it for the first time, you will get
a "Welcome to NetMeeting" Wizard thingy, where you Set it up with the
bits it needs to get started.

& then it puts a Shortcut on the Desktop & in the QuickLaunchBar
(but oddly enough not in the Start Menu) - you can always make
a Shortcut to it in the Start Menu as well (or instead) if you want.

LOL!!!
:-)

& Just as I was getting to this bit, you called me up using
M$ NetMeeting!
& we had a session!

So that means you had got it sussed out anyway.

& it all seems to be working great!
:-)

A bit of minor fiddling (which we did) may have helped with some of
the things, but it's now all working as it should.

So a lot of this Reply is now prolly superfluous, but some people may
find it interesting &/or helpful, so I'll Post it anyway...
