My AVG Icon in task bar is grey and I am unable to get the updates.
Tells me to restart the computer but it does not make any
difference.

What does it say (what's the Error Message), when you try to Update
it? Does it say there's a problem Connecting to the Server?
Or does it say that it can't Locate (Find) the Server?
Or does it say that there aren't any Updates?

On the Task bar the icon is grey.
Holding mouse over the icon brings a message
"To finish the update process it is neccessary to restart the
computer next update scheduled on 30.6.06"

It sounds to me like it downloaded the .bin file it needed for the update,
but for some reason it hasn't actually installed it..maybe the download
corrupted , it happens sometimes. When I update it seems to be done in two
parts..getting the update ( where the blue bar goes across as it
downloads) and then installing it ( another box comes up while its doing
that).
Not until both bits are done does it tell me the update was successful

When I reboot it does not make any difference. The only difference
is that this has been a prob. for a couple of days and the message
has changed the scheduled date. I thought if I left it for a day it
would catch up with the re-schedule next day but it hasn't.

If it has been doing it for a few days then maybe it was the last one you
actually downloaded that failed to install properly. I looked in the place
on my pc where it puts the update files when they are downloaded.
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application
Data\Grisoft\Avg7Data\upd7bin
that is the path to the folder on my pc. Have a nosey and see what's there
in yours. I 'think' you need to look at the ones with .bin at the end of
the filename

Have a look at the date modified column and find the most recent one that
is in there.
Post up the filename and date for others to check against what's in their
folder. ( I can check mine, but am at the salaried fun tomorrow, so wont
be around till later in the evening)

<check with someone wot knows about the next bit>
If it were me <g> I would copy that file to my desktop and then delete it
from the update folder and try again. That 'may' not do the trick as I
think it also keeps a log of the ones it already has so it may confuse it
even more.

If all else fails, I would go to the AVG site, downlaod a fresh copy of
the prog, then go offline ( cos I am scaredy lol) and uninstall the
version you have, then reboot and install the new version. That will come
with all the latest updates and should put you back on track again, ready
for the next one.

Again, wait for the opinions of others , I am just guessing here.
