My AVG Icon in task bar is grey and I am unable to get the
updates.
Tells me to restart the computer but it does not make any

What does it say (what's the Error Message), when you try to
Update it?
Does it say there's a problem Connecting to the Server?
Or does it say that it can't Locate (Find) the Server?
Or does it say that there aren't any Updates?

On the Task bar the icon is grey.

Yep, that's just to tell you that it's not up to date.
& you need to do an Update.

Holding mouse over the icon brings a message
"To finish the update process it is neccessary to restart the
computer next update scheduled on 30.6.06"

Yep - It's normally Scheduled to do an *Automatic* UpDate once per Day.
& if it's attempted an Update already today, then you can either wait
until the next *Scheduled* Update (which will be the next Day), or
do a *Manual* Update - by Clicking the [Update] Button in the AVG
Control Centre thingy.

If you do that & have a problem getting the Update, then Post back
with what happens & what Message(s) you get.

When I reboot it does not make any difference. The only difference
is that this has been a prob. for a couple of days and the message
has changed the scheduled date.

It *may* be having a prob Connecting to the AVG Servers, to get
the Update?

Double clicking the icon takes me to AVG Control Panel - is red -
clicking on that and then on update now, I get the message "Update
was unsuccessful"

Oh dear!!!

& does it say any more details about *why* it was unsuccessful?

Look carefully at it, while it's trying (directly after you Press
the [Update Now] Button) & see whether or not it goes through the
process (with the little Messages which should say something like
"Lookup up Server... Connecting to Server... Checking Database...
Downloading Database.. etc.) & see how far it gets & at what stage
it fails.
