Hold on a mo!...

Slow down a bit...
Can you tell us what Version of Nero you have & also what CD (or DVD)
ReWriter you have?

It's Nero Express 6.6 and it came with two discs - Nero OEM Suite and
CyberLink PowerDVD 5, so I hope that helps. The discs are Imation DVD-R 8x
4.7GB - 120min. >

& also, what made you use "Nero Start Smart"?

I used Nero cos they'd put a shortcut on the desktop, so it was just easier.

Why not just use the actual Nero Burning Rom thing?

Isn't that I've been doing and failing at?

Yes, I know that "Start Smart" thing claims to be simple, but that's only
cos it hides the stuff that you really need to know about!

If you use the ordinary Nero Burning Rom Program (I assume that's
the one that came with the CD/DVD ReWriter that you've just had
fitted?), then you can work your way through the various Options
& soon get it all sorted.
Nero also has plenty of "Information" stuff, which will check the
CD/DVD Drive & also check the CD/DVD Disk (Media) that you are using.

... So far, so good. When I click on "Add", a list of all My
Docs etc come up on the screen so I've clicked on "My Pictures",
clicked on all the photies in there, and started the burning of same,
then got error messages on the screen.

Well, did you choose (somewhere along the line) the Option to:
"Make a Data CD/DVD"?

I thought that might have been the problem pmj. Yesterday I clicked on the
"Burn a CD" button, but today I used the "Make a Data Disk" and used a
different blank DVD-R. I seemed to get a bit further using the Wizard, but
for some reason after it went through the verifying bit, and started the
burning bit, the DVD was spat out of the poota. I didn't press the ejector
seat - honest((((

You haven't told us what make / model of drive it is, have you?
I mean, it IS a recordable drive isn't it?

This might be a silly question, but have you checked to see if anything
did get written to the disc?
It's sometimes surprising how quickly this can happen.
Otherwise.....
Have you tried to read or play any pre recorded cd"s / dvd's?
What happened when you did?
Does the drive require the installation of any drivers, and have you
installed them?
Is the drive recognised correctly without any errors in Control Panel /
System / Hardware / Device Manager?

Have you considered taking it back to the shop and complaining?
You seem to be having an innordinate amount of trouble with what is
actually a very simple upgrade. These things should just work.
