The normal Rules of English Grammar (& spelling?) state which version
is to be used in each case.
One is a Verb & one is an Adjective (I think!)
:-)
Burned - Verb - doing something
Burnt - Adjective - describing something.
Someone *please* correct me if that's not right.
Sorry pmj, according to the Concise Oxford Dictionary, both 'burnt' and
'burned' are (both) the past tense and past particple of the verb 'to burn'.
No adjectival form given (the particple is used adjectivally).
I thought, on first reading Grey Wolf's post, thatthere was some difference
in useage between the words, but every example I devised turned out to fit
with either spelling.
I think 'burned' tends to be used for active voice - ie something was doing
the burning, and burnt for passive voice, ie something had been burnt; but
there's no hard and fast rule.
