<snipo>I had a similar experience several weeks ago.
I use Forte Free Agent as my newsreader and was reading
Silversurfers as you do.
Out of the blue appeared on the screen an unusual shaped cursor
and pointer - both black as I recall. The cursor was a big black
diamond with an approx 1/4in line sticking out of each corner.

Does anyone else recognise this big black diamond cursor and can
suggest under what circumstances it can appear.
Many thanks.
I'm not sure (from that description) what that Cursor is.
Any chance of a ScreenShot of it?
Is it any of the standard windoze Cursors?
have a look in the Mouse Properties (on the "Pointers" Tab)
& Scroll down that List - see if it shows up there?
(try some of the "Large" Schemes as well)
Also, Click the [Browse...] Button, which will show you a "Browse"
Dialog Box of a whole load more Cursor (.ani & .cur) Files, that are
stored in the "Cursors" folder, in the windoze Folder.
If you can pin down what the Cursor is (it may be supplied by a 3rd
party Pr4ogram), then you are going to be half way to sussing out
what causes it & what it's for.

Many thanks for that.I have now been for the first time on a Magical
Mystery tour of Cursors.
Like you I do not recognise in there the black diamond cursor that I
remember.
Remember however that I only saw it for a few seconds as it was
scrolling things on its own apparently.I thought I was being invaded
and quickly switched it off.Hence no screenshot (whatever that is).
Comparing it in my mind with the many and various cursors in
Pointers/Browse it looks most like a 'Move' cursor in that the four
lines coming from the corners pointed up/down/left/right but none in
Browse have the central diamond.
I also recall there were two cursors when it was taking off on its
own.One was a normalish arrow but bigger and all black instead of
outlined. The second was the big black diamond with the four lines
sticking out of the corners. Now I think further itwas a bit like those
positioning things you get in Graphics/Photo Manipulation programs
like PSP.
Either way since we have looked through the whole Windows compendium
and not found it - we may be back to your suggestion it may be
associated with some 3rd Party Program - either benign or not.
If you (or anyone) has any further thoughts in light of the above I
would be most grateful.
If not we shall have to leave it as the second unexplained glitch in
the ether in as many days.
Either way I am very appreciative of your help.
Hawkeye
