New names appearing in here and that is great! Welcome to anyone
I missed on arrival cos I have been a busy ( and very snotty!) Boo.

I hope you are feeling better (& are less busy) soon...
Oh!- Just in time for another joliiday!
:-)

I am interested in the journey to get here though. When this group
was first formed we were hoping that it would be useful, not only
for those who already knew about the net ( and usenet in particular)
but for what it says on the tin - older people new to pcs and wanting
to know more about this medium we use. ( as well as all the other
stuff that goes on in here)

I have always worried a bit that the very people who would most
benefit from the help and advice in here wont know the group exists.

Yep, that's one of the major probs, isn't it?

Newsgroups *really* can be very useful & helpful (as well as fun
& entertaining), but I know that lots of people really have no idea
about them (or even that they exist)
:-(

... More and more isps seem to be discarding newservers,

Yep, which is a pity, but there *are* actually plenty of independent,
3rd Party News Servers around, that people can use (but only, obviously,
when they have found out that Newsgroups exist in the 1st place!)

... though I suspect that a few find there way here via web based
things like Google groups

Yep - there are quite a few WebSites that take newsgroup Posts
& put them on their Web Pages.

Most people have heard of "the Web", (& know the basics of looking
around & finding stuff) even if they haven't heard of "Usenet" or
Newsgroups or things like "NNTP" - Network News transfer protocol",
which is like SMTP & POP3 & IMAP4, but for Newsgroup Messages/Posts,
rather than for eMail.

... and then can, if they wish, find out about using a newsreader
to access this and other groups.

Yep!
There's plenty of Newsgroups around for all sorts of different things!
:-)

& they can all be Read using a simple & easy to use Interface, such
as the built-in Newsreader that comes supplied with windoze (OutLook
Experess) offers - if you can read an eMail & Compose & Send an eMail,
then you can use a Newsreader!
:-)

So, if you are new-ish round here, would you mind indulging me
and telling us how you found the group?
ta!

Well, I've only been Posting in this particular Newsgroup
news:uk.people.silversurfers
for just over 4 Years (since Feb 2002), so I'm relatively new?

& I'm still learning about plenty of stuff & finding out how to do
things & how to make things work like they should.
:-)

I found out about this Newsgroup, by hearing about it, (& looking on
the Newsgroups List<g>) when I was Posting into the Newsgroups that
were available on the News Server that one of the ISPs that I used ran.

I found out about (Usenet) Newsgroups in General (as opposed to just
this particular Newsgroup) in the late 90's (1996/7 & 8), when I first
started using the Internet.

I was impressed by the range of Information that is available on
(in) Newsgroups & by how easy it is to Set up a Newsreader/eMail
Client Program (such as OutLook Express) to Connect to a News Server
so as to fetch the Posts to Read & to then Read them & Post back my
Replies into any of the Threads (conversations) that I find Interesting.
:-)
