Apologies for not replying previously to this, now defunct, thread.
LOL!
Nope, it's not "defunct"!
It's merely "sleeping"!
:-)
& Thread is only Dead (defunct, "pushing up the daisies" etc,)
when nobody Posts any Replies to it!

Jeff Gaines was kind enough to send me lengthy and very detailed
instructions on setting up a network connection between my laptop
running XP Home and my desktop, running Win '98.
I'm sorry to say that I hit an obstacle pretty soon after attempting
to start the set-up.
OK, so that's not a real prob!
It's just (like you say) an "obstacle"!
It's not insurmountable!
:-)
The first step went OK, when I found my workgroup name in XP,
which is MSHOME.
Is that WinXP Professional?
Or WinXP Home Edition?
WinXP Home Edition.
I ask, cos I've noticed that some WinXP Pro Installations seem to use
one Default "Workgroup" Name (oddly enough of "MSHOME" & others use
a different one.
& many WinXP Home Installations just use whatever the (OEM)
Manufacturer Sets it up as.
Second step I found that in Win '98 on my desktop, the workgroup
name in 'Network Neighborhood' was set as 'OEM Workgroup',
Yep.
w98 seems to do that (it all depends on who did the Installation
& how it was done)
... which I was able to change to 'MSHOME', no problem.
Yep, the whole idea is that whatever it is, it can be changed
to whatever you want (or need) it to be, to suit your particular
circumstances.
... I rebooted the machine and was told that a new database was
being set-up
That *sounds* like the windoze (98) "Add New Hardware" thingy was
doing it's stuff?
It does that, when it detects changes to the "Hardware" & it counts
changes to the Network Settings as being changes to the Hardware!!!
... and I had to reboot to start again.
Yep, w9x is fond of continulaly needing reBoots, when you change
things like that.
I must admit I panicked after that when I tried to put things back to what they where originally, e.g. OEMWorkgroup, only to find that the machine kept starting up in safe mode. So I have left it at MSHome and it seems quite happy, this is the PC of course.
The next step was where it started to go pear-shaped. Clicking on
'users' in Win '98 showed that there were no users,
Where *exactly* did you Click on "Users"?
Was that in the "Control Panel"
Yes, there's a little icon in Control Panel which I clicked and it then asked me to set up multiple users accounts.
Well, that's exactly what I did as I didn't know what names or other information it might need.
w98 has several different things associated with handling the User
Accounts & (as you found next) some of the things (when they are
first done) start up a "Wizard"...
... but started an installation programme to set up 'multiple-users'.
Yep.
Even if you are only going to (subsequently) just use one "User"
Name/Account, the process of Setting it up to use Multiple Users is
initiated, when you first Open up that "Users" Control Panel Applet.
& then (after the Multiple User Settings have been Set up) you never
get to see that Wizard again!
That's why you won't see many people mentioning it!
... I had no idea what information to input here.
So what did you do then?
Just Exiting out of it may not have been the best thing to do.
I have since found that I have an account in XP under the name of 'Bryan Jones Computer Administrator'. There is also provision for a Guest account which is 'Off'.
Unfortunately I do not know what the user name is on the XP machine
and have never had to log on with one, or use a password.
There are several ways of finding out what User Name you are actually
Logged in with, in WinXP - Boo has mentioned one)
Post back with what you get in there.
Using two of the methods recommended I can confirm that the user account is under my name, makes sense I suppose.
Incidentally going to Start>Run...net user (OK) returned a 'Windows cannot find etc..'
Fine, thanks for your continuing support.
You can Copy & Paste from that Window (just type "exit" & Press [Enter]
when you've finished, or use the Red "X" [Close] Button)
Thank you for all the trouble you have gone to but perhaps it's
best if I left well alone now as this is something which is obviously
beyond my capabilities.
No it isn't!...
:-)
With some help, advice & guidance from people in here (& from what
you can find by looking up various Reference Sources on the Web),
you will be able to get it all sorted out OK!
:-)
So, now I go back to the PC with Win'98 and open 'Users Accounts' in Control Panel and type in my name?
But what about this password, is that necessary?
