Interesting discussion snipped

... In my own mind I can't think why there should be, I suppose
I'll just have to dive in and try.

Yep!
Why not?
:-)

You can't really *physically* make it Brokted, trying, can you?
The worst that can happen is that it doesn't Connect up OK
& you can always do a "Hard" (Factory) ReSet on it, if you Screw
the Settings up, can't you?

True
But my issue is do you think there be any probs setting it up on
the desktop with a WiFi and then getting rid of that and using the
ethernet cable on the same machine.

Nope - though I really can't see the point, if you're going to use
an Ethernet Cable with it!
Though you may be like me & just want to have it Connected up using
the WiFi, "just cos you can"!
:-)

My PC here, at the mo, is Connected to the Cable Modem (that is
sitting right next to it) by a *WiFi* Connection!!!
:-)

The WiFi thingy is connected to the Cable Modem, using the Ethernet
Cable that was originally Connecting the Cable Modem directly to
the PC!
:-)

Why?
Well, why not?
I wanted to do a bit (more) of finding out about WiFi stuff.

... I can Wifi enable my desktop to set up the router with the
USB dongle.

Yep, you *can*, but you really don't need to.

The issues (if there are any) that I can see are not really about
the actual WiFi Connection (or Seting up of it) Working (or not
working)...

They are only that I think that having loads of USB stuff (that is,
the Drivers for it all) Installed can lead to variosu probs.

& I know that *some* USB Drivers (especially for WiFi things & Modems
etc,) can be a bit temperamental, & also critical of the order & way
that they are Installed. - Though others are fine & cause no probs!

& also, many Firms USB WiFi things seem to Install (or expect you
to Install) loads of *other* Software, over & above the actual
Drivers themselves, which can (& does, in some cases) cause various
other probs, unrelated to the WiFi/Networking side of things.

<snip>
BTW - I've just read a bit further down that Page...
& it says this...

<quote>
If you do not have a wireless capable computer, you can still
use
your router?s Ethernet ports.

They will allow you to connect using an Ethernet cable, so long
as your computer has a network port. View the section on Wired
Connections at the end of this article for more information.

Yes this bit worries me as they make a big thing about definitely
not setting it up from and ethernet cable

But they don't actually say *why* not, do they?
What possible probs could it cause?

I'll Answer that...
None.

They just prefer people to all stick to the same way of doing it -
that makes life easier (for them & the User?) if there are any probs

... then say things that seem to contradict that.

Exactly!
That's cos you really *don't* actually *have* to use the WiFi
to Set it up.

If they didn't say as much on their Site, then someone would be
bound to point it out, so (I think) they have to cover themselves,
basically, by saying you can use the Ethernet Connection if yo uwant.

So, (if you like to & prepared to believe all the stuff that's
written on those sort of Pages), you *can* actually use the Ethernet
Cable Connection to do it, after all! :-)

& you *don't* have to use the WiFi to do it!
:-)

I'll just set up the Wireless USB adapter dongle and then just
try it I think.

OK.
But why not just *try* it using the stright forwards, basic Ethernet
Connenction?

Isn't that the much easier way & the way with less potential for
things going wrong?

An (existing) Ethernet Connection on your PC needs no Additional
Drivers or Software, - it just works!

& if (for some strange reason), this (apparently) weird Router [*1]
requires some Configuration Settings to be made on it using the WiFi
(which it doesn't, but lets humour them) & which a "Hard ReSet"
doesn't sort out, then all(?) you need to do would be to Install the
Drivers for the USB WiFi Dongle Thingy & the various other bits of
Software taht it comes with & then use that.

Many thanks and fingers crossed.

Yep, let us know how you get on?

We can safely assume that doing it with the WiFi will work fine
(assuming the Drivers for it Install OK) - what I'd be *especially
interested in is how much easier you find that it is, using the
Ethernet Connection to do it!
:-)

How will you compare the 2 ways then?
So as to say which is easier?...

Do them both!
LOL!
:-)
