Obviously you wouldn't be discussing MicroSoft, but you could well be
discussing Digital Research and CP/M86 and its successors and the GEM
windowed GUI.

Maybe, but from my point of view ( a numpty one) it would seem that
whoever they are, they either didn't reach the public, or maybe they were
bought out by Microsoft. Saying 'bought out' seems to be the signal for
the soapboxes to be dragged out and the horrors of big business to be
discussed, but I never really quite grasp why its bad for big business to
buy out and somehow ok for smaller ones to sell out, take the money and
run :)

Neither email, news, nor the Web owe much to Microsoft.
