& NetMeeting is good for that sort of thing as well, cos then
the other person can actually *see* what's what with the PC -
Yes, must try that again some time. Used it with Noreen some
time ago when I was helping her with Paint shop pro but last time
we tried we couldn't get a connection.
Was that before or after she got her new PC & her ADSL Modem
Router that she now uses, instead of the USB ADSL Modem?
We used it when Noreen had her old computer but haven't been able
to manage it since she had her new one and since I went on to
wireless broadband
Ah...
When you (or the other person, or both) are using a router (WiFi
or otherwise), that can introduce a couple of "Gotchas", when trying
to use Netmeeting...
NetMeeting relies on being able to call the other Persons *IP*
Address of their PC.
But when a PC is behind a Router, then it's allocated (by the Router)
an IP Address in the "Private IP Address Range" - usually 192.168.x.x
or 10.0.x.x using NAT (Network Address Translation) & by definition
those (Private) IP Addresses aren't accessible from the Internet.
Yo ucan call out from a PC behind a Router to a PC that isn't behind
a Router OK, but for a PC that is behind a Router to be able to
*Receive* Incoming netMeetin gCalls, you need to Set up the *Router*
to do "Posrt Forwarding".
You need to Set the Router to "Forward" any Incoming Connection
stuff (from the Internet, to the IP Address of your Router, which
your ISP gives it) *to* the relevant Port on the PC, that you want
to accept the Incoming Calls on.
Your Router will have a facility for that in its Admin/Setup Pages.
For NetMeeting, you just need to Forward TCP Ports 1503 & 1720
to the IP Address of the PC.
& then you will be able to Receive Incoming NetMeeting Calls.
For making *Outgoing* NetMeeting Calls from behind a Router, you
don't need to do anything - it's the *other* person who has to make
sure that *their* Router is Set up to Forward the Incoming Connections
to their PC.
Gissa call on Skype (or NetMeeting) sometime & we can sort all that
out OK.
My System is Set up OK for Receiving Incoming NetMeeting Calls,
so all we will need to do is to nip into the Admin/Setup Pages
of your Router & Set up the Port Forwarding on that.
Then Noreen will be able to call you up OK
With you now both being on Broadband, you will really see how useful
NetMeeting is!
:-)
