OK but I need a bit more specific advice on what to edit or delete.
Some progress has been made in that we have got it to the first
restart stage but it restarts to the wrong place possibly because
of all this multiboot options stuff.Should we get rid of it.
Yep, Boot up into your W98SE Installation & Edit the Boot.ini
to get rid of the Redundant Entries in it.
& also it would be a good idea to Delete the various Temporary
Installation Folders & Boot Files from the Hard Drive, so it can
start from fresh.
Where should it reboot to and how do we get it to reboot there.
My suggestion (& what I would do) is to Scrub the lot & start again
(from the i386 Folder that you Copied to your Hard Drive)
I look forward as ever to all your thoughts.
See above.
:-)
I'll tell you what's there now if you tell me what to do with it.OK?
Firstly here is a transcript of Boot.ini
[Boot Loader]
Timeout=5
Default=C:\$WIN_NT$.~BT\BOOTSECT>DAT
[Operating Systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home
Edition" /noexecute=optin/fastdetect
C:\="Microsoft Windows"
C:\$WIN_NT$.~BT\BOOTSECT.DAT="Microsoft Windows XP Setup"
And that's it.It has a time/date stamp of yesterday when I was trying
to install XP from H:\Winnt32.exe.
Canyou tell me which lines I need to edit and to what.Which lines do I
need to delete and which to leave alone.
I naively thought the whole File was created by XP and therefore if
you wanted to start with a clean *** you would delete the whole
file. With your exceptional patience you will no doubt explain it to
me.
And I need to leave it at that for now as I have to go out this
morning.
I will provide details of the other files and folders littered about
as a result of the various attempts to reinstall XP.You are right
there's quite a lot. Then you can tell me what to delete.I'll do that
after I get back.
Continuing grateful thanks
Hawkeye
