Can you Post up some examples of what the STOP Error Message(s)
say?
In particular any References to any "Modules" or Files that
it says.
<snip>... Examples are as follows:
(1)PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA / STOP:0x00000050
That's a sort of "Catch-All" Error, actually - *loads* of things
can cause (or result in) that.
(2)BAD_POOL_CALLER / STOP:0x000000C2 (twice)
I dunno what that means, sorry.
(3)CDFS_FILE_SYSTEM / STOP:0x00000026
Ah!
So it's something to do with the CD File System Driver then?
(4) ditto as 3 but with 'cdfs.sys Address F76879D5' at bottom
Same there.
(5) No words/nofile just STOP:0x0000008E
(6)STOP:0x0000008E with 'setupdd.sys Address F74CD7D3'
Well, if you do a Web Search with any of those "STOP" Error Messages
It *might* possibly, be a Memory (RAM) prob?
I just found several Articles that mention some of those STOP
Errors, when they occur during Setup
Have a look here...
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=315335
Do have a look at that M$KB Article (& other similar ones)
<snip>
Here is the post back with what happens. There is some good news
but not a lot.
I copied the i386 folder from the XP CD to the HDD - all 5305
objects 343 MB.
That sounds about right.
Though I assume that's just the *Files* in the i386 Folder? - & not
the other Sub-Folders as well?
... It seemed so important doing what pmj told me and all -
I only suggested doing the Install from a Copy of the i386 Folder
on the Hard Disk, so that it doesn't have to Access the CD/DVD Rom
Drive (in case that was something to do with the prob, since a couple
of the BSoD STOP Errors that you got mentioned a prob with the CD
Filing System Driver - cdfs.sys
... I copied it to a separate empty partition on the 2nd HDD ie
H:\.It copied ok.
I tried to run H:\i386\Winnt32.exe from DOS but it wouldn't.
Nope, it's a 32Bit Executable, so you need to Run it from within
windoze. - Just Double Click on it.
If you want to Run the WinXP Setup Routine from MSDOS, then you need
to Run the File WinNT.exe (& not WinNT32.exe)
... So I cranked up W98SE ( the only OS I have for the mo) and ran
it from the Start/Run Cmd prompt
Yep, you can do it that way, but it will Run perfectly OK, just by
Navigating to it in windoze Explorer, then DoubleClicking it (or
RightClicking it & Selecting "Open (Run)"
... having disconnected the Router and Printer connections annd shut
down ZA and AVG.
Good idea, it's usually best to do a windoze Install with as little
other stuff Running as possible & also with the minimum amount of
Hardware stuff (such as Printers, Scanners, Modems etc,) Plugged in.
Get the basic Operating System Installed & Running OK, then you can
Install the various other bits of Hardware.
Well it came up with the Windows type XP installn screen annd set
off Preparing Installn/Copying Installn Files.
Yep, that's it Copying the "MiniSetup" stuff, so that it can continue
after the First ReBoot.
About halfway across the green progress bar 'Fatal Exception 0E
at0028:C02BE417 in VXD IFSMGR(04) + 00015C33'.An old friend from
W98SE.
Doh!
:-(
IFSMGR.VXD is the "Installable File System" Driver, which is a fairly
essential (crucial) bit of windoze.
So restart W98SE and run H:\i386\Winnt32.exe from the start/run/cmd
prompt again-this time without shutting down ZA/AVG.
This time Preparing Installn/Copying Installn Files completed
without BSOD and we got to see the Restarting Computer - Red
Progress Bar.
It's strange that it should appear to do OK, with ZA & AVG Running,
but not *without* them Running!
Normally you would expect it to work the other way around!
For the avoidance of doubt this is the Good News.
Because when it resarts we get these options - Boot from CD drive -
press any key - no I'm sure we don't want that. There's nothing in
there.
Well, it should only say "Press Any Key to Boot from CD", if there
*is* a (Bootable) CD in the Drive (that Message comes from the CD Boot
Sector).
But either way, you don't need to Boot from the CD, cos it's s'posed
to Boot from the (Temporary) Boot File that it has just Copied across
to the Hard Drive.
... So it defaults to the multi boot options of which there are
currently three - (1) WindowsXP which for the time being doesn't
exist.
Yep, you can soon Edit the Boot.ini File & get rid of that Redundant
Entry.
... (2)Windows(aka W98SE) (3) WindowsXP Setup to which it defaults
if you do nothing which I did(n't).
It might have been idea to actually try Booting into your W98SE
Installation at that point?
That way you could see the various stuff that it's Copied across,
so far.
(I have done no end of looking at the state of things *during* an
Install.
That way I have learned a fair bit about it & what it does.
So now it starts upagain in XP setup but this time in the dos/text
version annnd from the very beginning - not from the first restart
where we had got to via H:\i386\winnt32.exe.
Yep, that's right.
It's Reading the stuff from the WinNT.sif (or TxtSetup.sif) Answer File
& things like that (which it created with the Settings that you gave it
during the first few Screens.
Or it *might* have been just cos the first (attempted) Installation
Crashed?
Anyway let it go/answer the (different) questions but you get to the
same place in the end - Setup is copying Installn Files - and it does
even though there is no XP CD in the CD drive. So where is it copying
them from we wonder.
From the i386 Folder that you Copied across to the Hard Drive?
... Somewhere on the HDD from the evidence of the HDD activity
LED.Perhaps from H:\i386 but how does it know I put them there.
Cos that's where you Ran the WinNT32.exe File from, surely?
... I very much hope I will be enlightened.
So now how to finish with a whimper rather than a bang. The copying
of installn files creeps across the yellow progres band to 100% -
whereupon the screen goes black and up comes the BSOD.Reported as
per the format at the top.
Doh!!!
That's a real Bugger!
:-(
No capitals - STOP: 0x0000008E setupdd.sys Address F74CD7D3.
Look at that MSKB Article (above) that I mentioned?
(& also that's the same one that Jeff Gaines mentioned)...
"STOP 0x0000008e" error message during Windows XP setup
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=315335
& there are various other M$KB Articles which mention the various
STOP Error Messages that can happen during Setup.
I give up for one day.I hope you can make some sense of it.
It's a bit difficult, when we aren't actually there! - to see what's
going on
:-(
We are having to rely on what you have Posted up about it.
Some progress has been made in that we have got it to the first
restart stage but it restarts to the wrong place possibly because
of all this multiboot options stuff.Should we get rid of it.
Yep, Boot up into your W98SE Installation & Edit the Boot.ini
to get rid of the Redundant Entries in it.
& also it would be a good idea to Delete the various Temporary
Installation Folders & Boot Files from the Hard Drive, so it can
start from fresh.
Where should it reboot to and how do we get it to reboot there.
My suggestion (& what I would do) is to Scrub the lot & start again
(from the i386 Folder that you Copied to your Hard Drive)
I look forward as ever to all your thoughts.
See above.
