The latest episode in my dual boot (W98SE/XPH) fiddling/faffing
saga concerns XP.
<snip>
After about six unsuccessful attempts to reinstall XP it's time
to ask for help from my friends in UPS.
<snip>
... This proceeds ok fora while and 'copies files to the Windows
installation folder'.The instant this finishes however I get the
same Stop Error screen again and you can only restart the pc and
start over.

When you say "the instant it finishes", do you mean before the
Countdown to Reboot thingy? (the Red Progress Bar, saying:
"The PC will Reboot in 15 Seconds")

Or do you mean after it has (started to) Reboot (i.e. after the
15 Second Timer has finished) & before the next Stage is reached?

I mean the moment the yellow progress bar in Setup is Copying
Files gets to 100% annd disappears.

Ah!
So that's actually (just) *before* it ReBoots!...

... For a millisecond there is a Setup screen which says something
about 'Initialisation' but before you have time to read it it is
replaced by the STOP error message BSOD.

I *think* that bit says something like "Initialising Registry".

I never see the Red Countdown to reboot.

So that means that it's Crashing before the Automatic ReStart.

So maybe the Stop Error is before we get to the first reboot.

Yep.

... Is there another process in between Copying Files and Reboot
that is something to do with Initialisation (whatever that is).

Yep.
<snip>
So, what we need to do then, is to try & find out what's going
wrong at that point?
<snip>
Can you Post up some examples of what the STOP Error Message(s)
say?
In particular any References to any "Modules" or Files that it says.

There seems to be 3 bespoke bits to the Stop Error Messages.

Yep, they are all based on a standard sort of Layout/template,
containing the standard BSoD Text, with the relevant Module/Filename
& Error Code Number & Address Info varying.

At the top there is often but not always some words in capitals
which may be what you mean by Modules.

Nope, that's the actual Error Message (which equates to the
(Hexadecimal) Number of the Error.

Near the bottom there is always STOP with a code

Yep, that's the Number (in Hexadecimal), which equates to the Error
Message Text (if any) above it.

... plus 4 more bits of code in brackets(which I'll ignore for the mo).

Those will be the Stack Contents, I think, which will usually be
different each time & is only any use to a Programmer.

Then sometimes but not often just below the STOP code there is the
name of a file

That's what we (you) need to know!

... with an Address plus more numbers which I'll ignore also.

Yep, the actual Memory Address is only any use to a Programmer.

... Examples are as follows:
(1)PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA / STOP:0x00000050

That's a sort of "Catch-All" Error, actually - *loads* of things can
cause (or result in) that.

(2)BAD_POOL_CALLER / STOP:0x000000C2 (twice)

I dunno what that means, sorry.

(3)CDFS_FILE_SYSTEM / STOP:0x00000026

Ah!
So it's something to do with the CD File System Driver then?

(4) ditto as 3 but with 'cdfs.sys Address F76879D5' at bottom

Same there.

(5) No words/nofile just STOP:0x0000008E

(6)STOP:0x0000008E with 'setupdd.sys Address F74CD7D3'

Well, if you do a Web Search with any of those "STOP" Error Messages
(& also the Hexadecimal Error Code Number (& any File/Module Name
that is shown), you should find some Info about it (especially if you
Look on the support.microsoft.com (M$ Knowledgebase) Site).

The Error Number 0x0000008E corresponds to an Error:
"KERNEL_MODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED"

There's a List somewhere (on the M$KB Site) of what actual Error Message
correponds to which Error Number, sorry I don't have the URL for that
to hand.

It *might* possibly, be a Memory (RAM) prob?
I just found several Articles that mention some of those STOP Errors,
when they occur during Setup

Have a look here...
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=315335

I am hoping that the knowledgeable ones in here will be able to help
me out of this vicious circle.

See above.
A lot of the time, it's knowing where (& how) to look up the Info
that you need, that matters.
:-)

It might also be an idea to Copy the whole of the i386 Folder to your
Hard Drive & Run the Setup from there? Rather than from the CD.
Look for the (Executable) File WinNT32.exe (in the i386 Folder)
& Run that.

<snip>
The only clue I have is that the problems seem to arise when the
installation process (in both methods) gets to the stage when it
needs to reboot the pc.

OK, so that's the clue we need to work on...

What Partitions do you have on the PC at the mo?

I'll reply to the next bit (about the Partitions, etc,) in another,
separate Reply.
But in the meantime, can you try Running Setup from a Folder on
the Hard Disk? - Having Copied all the Files across from the i386
Folder previously & see (& Post back with) what happens.
