& also have it Set not to Hide Extensions & "Protected"
Operating System Files
[ ] Hide Extensions for known File Types
[ ] Hide protected Operating System Files
UnTick both of those.
I got a message box at this point:
"Warning
You have chosen to display protected Operating System Files
(files labelled System and Hidden) in Windows Explorer.
These files are required to start and run Windows. Deleting
or editing can make your computer inoperable".
That's a normal Windows warning, un-ticking the boxes won't cause
any problems, best not to delete any files in your Windows folder
though :-)
Yep, windoze is fond of Popping up all sorts of dire Warnings -
*some* of which you do actually need to be very careful about,
but others are to Warn you about *possible* problems, or cos it
can't tell whether something is OK or not & needs you to decide...
But that Warning about "Displaying Protected OS Files" is really just
that - it's a *Warning*. You need to realise that when you can see
Files like that (which are normally Hidden), that doesn't mean you
should Delete (or Edit) them, without knowing what they are & what
they're for & what the consequences of Deleting them would be.
But you *do* need to be able to *see* them. Just so you can check that
what's s'posed to be there actually *is* there (& so as to be able to
Delete the stuff if you *do* have to.
Not hiding extensions is important, in my view everybody should
un-tick that.
Yes, *definitely*.
Not being able to see the File Extensions causes no end of probs,
for loads of people.
... It's old hat now but some virus might be called
'IAmAVirus.txt.exe', if you have extensions hidden it will show
up as 'IAmAVirus.txt' and you might accidentally open it expecting
it to be a text file.
Yep.
& if the File extensions aren't shown, when you go looking for
a particular File, (for whatever reason) you won't be sure that you
have actually found it, (or that it's not there) if the File Extension
isn't shown.
Just so that I a belt *and braces* can I go over this procedure
please.
Yep, good idea!...
:-)
Click Start
Click on Search - --- in Search Results box
Nope.
Just Open up a normal "windoze Explorer" View - you can do that by
using the Shortcut to windoze Explorer in the Start menu (in the
"Accessories" Section, in the "All Programs" Section), or by just
Right Clicking "My Computer" & choosing "Explore", or by Pressing
(& Holding) the "windoze Flag" Key (to the Right of the Space Bar)
& then Pressing the "E" Key.
Or by pressing the [Folders] button in a normal "My Computer" Window.
Click on Tools
Select Folder Options
Select View Tab
Yep.
Or you can use the "Folder Options" thingy in the Control Panel
to get to the same place.
There are two buttons one [Apply to All Folders] which has a blue
border around it
Yep, that Border (Highlight) means that it's the "Default" Action,
which is what would happen, when you Press the [Enter] key, or the
[SpaceBar]
... and the other [Reset All Folders]
But neither of those are what we are talking about here...
Yo uwould use those Buttons, to Set the main View for the Windows
(such as Details, List, Icons, Tiles & Thumbnails, etc.)
Do I just leave these -
Yep, for the moment.
... what would happen if I clicked on [Apply to All Folders] ?????
It would Set All Folders to the same View (Details, List, Icons, Tiles,
Thumbnails, etc.)
You can do that if you want.
& you can then Tick the Option (in the List below the Buttons)
[/] Remember each Folders View Settings
So that means you can have most Folders showing the same View Settings,
but when yo uchange a particular Folder, it remembers it.
then do I
Scroll down and *untick*
Hide extensions for known file types.
Yep!
and
Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)
Yep!
also can you please explain "Better not delete any files in your
Windows folder though"
Just cos you can now see them, doesn't mean you should go Deleting
all the stuff you can now see!
:-)
But when you *can* see things like that, you can now have a look at
them (Opening them in Notepad or similar) to see what they are.
& occasionally you *will* need to Delete some particular File(s),
so you need to be able to See it to make sutre you're Deleting the
right stuff.
If I ticked on the [Apply to All Folders] button would that
delete files in the Windows Folder then?
Nope.
See above - all it does is Set the "View" - Details, List,
Thumbnails etc.)
Sorry from a Very Numpty Donut
You are learning more about what's what.
& when you know more about it all, then you will be able to make it
do what you want it to do.
