My experience with OE is limited to helping clients set up
accounts manually. Apart from that I have never used it.

You ought to try *using* it!?
:-)

Cos it's actually quite good for many ordinary type people,
who just want to Send & Receive eMails (& News Posts), without
too much Faffing around.
:-)

For the OE gurus, is this possible, preferably without having
to resort to anything third party or poking about in the registry?
(please read to the end before replying to any of this)

Ooops!
Sorry.
:-)

OK then...
On to the rest of your Query then...
I *have* Read it all, but have Replied "InLine", cos I reckoned that
it would be more Helpful & explain it better, if the Reply to a point
is at the place where the point is raised...

The scenario.
There are several accounts set up in OE, one of which is a Gmail
account. The others are attached to domain names.
All email addressed to the other accounts is forwarded to Gmail
(they are not pop accounts) and they are not checked on send/receive.

Doh!
I feel the need to Reply to that bit already!...
:-)

So why have them Set up in OutLook Express then?

Ah!
Obviously - so that Mail can be *Sent* from them, using the
particular Domain Name/eMail Address?

Yep, that makes eminent Sense.

The way to do that is to Set the *Receiving* Server for the eMail
Account in Question to the GMail Server.

So OE only checks the Gmail account, and an email to
me@xxxxxxxxxxxx
is automatically forwarded by the domain mail server to the
Gmail account.

The reasons for this are to make email checking easier, control
spam (Gmail is very good at that) and in a simplistic way sync
email across more than one machine.

With me so far? Good.

Yep - I think I am...

This is what we want to do.

Any replies to any received mail addressed to me@xxxxxxxxxxxx
should appear to have come from me@xxxxxxxxxxxxx This is a business.
The use of free email doesn't look very professional so we want to
hide that fact.

You won't be able to *completely* hide it.
Cos there will (on occasions) be times when some eMail Sent *To*
the Domain eMail Account might be undeliverable (when it's forwarded
to the Google Mail Account) & the Bounce/Failure Message will thus
be Sent from the Google Mail Servers.

Similar things can happen when using Services such as BigFoot.com

I can't see that this is possible with OE. Selecting the
me@xxxxxxxxxxxx
account to send from will provoke an error from the mail server
because that account effectively doesn't exist on the server.
It is forwarded.
So access to the smtp server is denied.

So use the ISP's SMTP Server?
You Specify that in the Account Properties in OutLook Express.

Most normal ISP's allow you to use their SMTP Server for *Sending*
any Mail, (with *any* "From: " Address on it), so long as you are
Connected up to the Internet using that ISP. (an exception,
unfortunately, is BT Broadband)

You might think that another way to do it would be to use the
*Google* SMTP Server?...
Cos they do have a Google Account & can thus use the Google
(Authenticated) Server...

Yes, that works, but then Google *change* the "From: " Header of
the mails passing through it!
:-(

Which rather defeats the object

Another way would be to use an SMTP Server such as Port995.com
http://port995.com

You can get an Account with them quite cheaply (about 15 Quid a Year?)
& that allows the use of their *Authenticated* SMTP Server & you
can use whatever "From: " Address you want.

Just Set up the SMTP Server in the Account Details in OutLook Express.

I have created a special account on one of the domain names
specifically for sending email. It's a pop account but it will
never be used for receiving. The user name is send.

Ah...
So that's like having an Account with a firm such as Port995.com then?

So there is only one domain name account option available for
sending email. send@xxxxxxxxxxxx to which you can only attach one
email address which does not have to be send@xxxxxxxxxxxxx

Which sounds like a bit of a limitation then?
:-(

So if the mail was addressed to him@xxxxxxxxxxxx there is no option
to make the reply look like it has come from him.

In Powermail, the mail application that I use, it is possible to
assign a specific smtp server as the default for all outgoing mail
irrespective of the account being used to send.

In OutLook Express you can Set up whatever SMTP Server you want,
for any of the Accounts.

I do this myself. All mail to all my domain name accounts is
forwarded to an IMAP dot mac account and I can reply using any
other account I have set up in Powermail, or indeed any old email
address I care to use.

Is there a similar option buried in Outlook Express?

Yep.
It's on the "Servers" Tab, in the Account Properties.
Fill in the Name of the SMTP Server that you want (or have) to use,
in the "Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server" Box.

Then Tick the Box...

Outgoing Mail Server---
[/] My Server requires Authentication

& Click the [Settings...] Button next to it (which will then become
"UnGreyed" & accessible)

Tick...

(/) Log on using...

& fill in the Boxes...

Account name:
PassWord:

Getting the client to change to another mail application is not
an option.

& they won't have to!
:-)

They *might* need to purchase an Account with a Firm such as
Port995.com, which offers the unrestricted use of an Authenticated
SMTP Server, if you can't Set the SMTP Server that they are using at the
moment to allow it.
But by far the simplest way (assuming they are using a normal ISP
& not one like BT Broadband), is to just use the ordinary SMTP Server
of their ISP.

I thank you.

& I HTH!

Sorry for Replying "InLine", but I feel that several of the points
you raise/mentioned could usefully be Addressed there & then.

I have seen several similar situations & know that OutLook Express
can handle it perfectly well.

& have Helped people get around those sort of (perceived) problems.

It's really a matter of what SMTP Server is available.
& how the *Server* is Set up...
OutLook Express can handle it OK.

If the ISP (such as BT Broadband) doesn't offer the use of an SMTP
Server, or if whatever SMTP Server the ISP (or other Provider offers)
insists on you using a particular "From: " eMail Address (or actually
(like Google) *changes* the From: " Address, then just use a different
SMTP Server (such as Port995.com)

HTH
