Make sure that the IMAPI Service is Enabled & Running.

Where do I find this?

You go to Start :Run and type services.msc in the box and
press ok
<snip>
Whooww! Thanks Boo!
IMAPI was set to Manual and I've clicked the 'Start' button.

It *should* Start up, by itself (provided it's not Set to Disabled,
which it isn't by Default), when you Insert a blank CD, or when you
RightClick on a File & Choose "Sendto>CD", or Drag & Drop (or Copy
& Paste) any Files/Folders to the CD Writer Drive

If it doesn't, there's something wrong, which would need to be
sorted out, so that it does.

I'm hoping that I will be able to burn CD's now using the W.CD
burning thingy!

& did it?
I've been watching this space wit hbated breth!
:-)

Wondering if it worked OK.
I got back in from working overnight & checked this Newsgroup for
Posts in the Threads that interested me & I couldn't see anything
from you about whether or not it worked OK
:-(

But that might be cos the Posts haven't got to the News Server yet.

I use it now and then, and the main thing I find useful about it
is that I can toddle round my pc and if I come across a folder
or file that I want to save I can just right click it and choose
Send to and then choose to end them to the rewritable cd drive.

Yep, that's handy isn't it?
:-)

... So, I can do it a bit at a time and add stuff as I go along and
at this stage I don't even need to have a blank cd in the drive,
just put the cd in when I am ready to actually burn them to disc

Yep.
I think a lot of people (especially people who have previously had
to (or only been able to) use 3rd Party CD Burning things, (such as
Nero or Adaptec/Roxio etc,) cos earlier Versions of windoze didn't do
CD Burning), don't realise how quick & easy it is with the Built-in
WinXP CD Burning thingy.

When I have told the pc to send the files to the cd burning folder
then I get a pop up balloon thing that tells me I have files waiting
to be written to cd and I can click to see the folder and the list
of files I have said I want to save on cd. If I have changed my mind
I can delete some or all at that stage.

& you can also see them, just by Selecting the CD (Writing) Drive
at any time - you don't *have* to do it from that ballon, when it
Pops up.

(I mention that, cos I know some people think that whenever a
"Notification Balloon" like that Pops up that it *has* to be sorted
out/delat with straightawy & they panic & rush to try & get to it
before it goes away. (or they worry that they missed it & thus
something dreadful is going to happen).
Those "Notification Ballons" really are just *Notification* things.

They aren't like a Dialog Box, which *does* need to be attended
to - Acknowledged or Dismissed (though some people ignore those
as well!)

As pmj said, you can't use the windows stuff to burn to dvd..
just to cds, but I just saw a straw floating by and I wonder if
its possible to build up the list of stuff you want saved by using
the windows thing..a bit at a time like I said ^ up there and then
use Nero to burn them to a dvd by pointing Nero to the cd burning
folder?

Yep, you *can* do it that way...

LOL may be a very round about way of doing things

Yes, it is a bit of a "round about way"...

... and not really any use to anyone,

I would think it may quite well be useful to lots of people!
:-)

... but I get nosey sometimes. I just tried it without actually burning
to dvd, but when I told Nero that I wanted to burn a data
dvd it let me choose the files I had saved to the CD burning folder.
Which, btw ( on my pc anyway) lives in
[Drive letter]:\Documents and Settings\MyUserName
\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\CD Burning

So, in theory, it 'should' be ok .

Yep, but surely, if you're going to have to use something like Nero
(to Burn the stuff to DVD), then why not just Drag & Drop the stuff
you want to Burn straight onto Nero?
:-)

Like you said, Dragging it onto Nero, from the CD Burning Stash
Folder thingy *is* a bit of a "round about way" & may be Confuzzling for
some people, when Nero can do it - Burning to DVD (by Drag & Drop)
anyway.

As you know I am just a nosey numpty though, so if I were you
I would do the baby steps and sort out getting it to do it to cds
first and wait for proper informed opinions as to if my dvd theory
would do the trick without sending your poota into cyber heaven :-)

LOL!

yep.
I agree, it's prolly a good idea (if there is some question as to
whether or not the built-in WinXP CD Burning (IMAPI Service) thingy
is working properly or not) to make sure that all works OK, before
Faffing around with DVDs.

Also, it makes a lot of sense not to have too much stuff, all on
one Disk?

If you Burn it all to DVD (& you're still just experimenting
& learning about it), then if something goes wrong with the DVD,
you have to do it all over again, but if you burn your stuff to
CDs, (to begin with, while you're getting the hang of it all) then
if one goes wrong (& so you have to do it again) it's not a great
big problem.
