But (also, like she suggested)
She did ? Well, well I must have missed a *suggestion*.
Yep.

She said...

Nero typically comes with utilities (and there are others on web)
to check your CD rdr/wrtr with speed benchmarks etc. If you're
consistently getting this with commercial pre written CD's then
perhaps prudent use of an aircan and/or IPA laced swab is called
for before upgrading the hardware? I'd make sure I'd discounted
all software/driver conflicts first though even if they are
relatively cheap.....
</quote>
From that it appears that she also (like I did) thought thatusing something like the Nero Diagnostic Tools (which come
already Installed with Nero Burning Rom), could be used to
Pinpoint (or Eliminate?) either (or both of) the actual CD/DVD
(Re-)Writer Hardware &/or the CD/DVD Disks themselves.
& cleaning the Disks themselves &/or the Laser Head, using a
(Compressed) Air Can, or a Swab (Cotton Bud/Pad/Gauze) with IPA
(IsoPropyl Alcohol - a well known, commonly used & Clinically Safe
& Sterile Cleaning Agent/Degreaser) may Help *if* the probs are due
to Dirt/Grease/Dust etc, on them.
But (also) that it's prolly better to check for (& hopefully, thus
Eliminate or Cure) any Software/Driver probs *first* - even though
they (Compressed Air cans & IPA Swabs etc) are relatively cheap.
It's taken me those 3 Paragraphs, to say/Paraphrase/repeat,
basically what she said in her one Paragraph (Quoted above).
try Running the various Diagnostic Tools on your Drive, that
Nero Supply - they are in the "Nero Toolkit" Folder in the
"Ahead" Folder in the "Program Files" Folder.
I think I've found something. Don't know what to do about it
( that's where you come in :-) ) but I think I've found what
might be wrong. Does ASPI not installed sound like the problem ?
If so what's the answer ?
Ah...
See below for my opinion & suggestion on that.
<snip>
Well, you prolly Fiddled with something!!!
Oh no I didn't !!!! :-)
Yes you did!!!
You have been using the PC for a few weeks now, haven't you?
Yes but apart from the initial problem with writing a DVD I haven't
used the writing facility
So what have you been using to make the Regular Backups of your
stuff that you do then?
:-)
... and it's kinda low on the priority list to fiddle with :-)
When I say *Fiddle*, that can cover *loads* of different things!!!
Even something as (seemingly) innocent as Clicking a Button in
a Dialog Box somewhere, or Answering the wrong Answer to a Prompt
that Pops up from something or other.
<snip>
The trick is to suss out exactly which (of the numerous Settings)
is the one (or ones) that is/are causing the trouble.
Suggestion above... ASPI not installed ?
Nope - I don't think that's the prob (or anything to do with it)
yes, ASPI *is* used (as Jeff Gaines mentioned) by *some* Software
for CD Burning (such as Nero & Adaptec/Roxio)
But windoze (or WinXP) doesn't use or need it.
The stuff that needs it (Nero/Adaptec/Roxio etc,) supplies it
& Installs it, as part of their own Installation.
But WinXP uses a different thing.
It uses IMAPI (Image Mastering Application Programming Interface)
For more Info about that, have a look at the various Reference
Pages, such as...
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/en-us/imapi/imapi/imapi_reference.asp
&
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/en-us/imapi/imapi/imapi_interfaces.asp
&
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/en-us/imapi/imapi/imapi_result_codes.asp
Here's a useful explanation of what it does & how it's used,
by various Programs...
CD Burning and Device Discovery with IMAPI
http://msdn.microsoft.com/msdnmag/issues/04/04/CQA
& both of the standard Sites with References to the various
Running Services & what they do & what can be Disabled & what
is needed to be Running explain about it...
http://theeldergeek.com/imapi_cd-burning_com_service.htm
http://forums.extremeoverclocking.com/blkviper/servicecfg.htm
http://majorgeeks.com/page.php?id=12
The BlackViper.com Site itself appears to have packed up!
:-(
But those last 2 URLs are Mirrors of it
& the usual "Process List" type Sites also explain what it is
& why it's usually needed.
http://liutilities.com/products/wintaskspro/processlibrary/imapi/
http://www.processlibrary.com/directory/files/imapi/
http://processid.com/imapi.exe.html
Basically, I think you have pinned down the (main cause of the)
prob, by looking in the Event Log & seeing that the IMAPI Service
(which is used by windoze for it's built-in CD Burning stuff
*isn't* actually Running when it *should* be!
You said you had found...
<quote>
The IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service service failed to start
due to the following error: Access is denied
</quote>
That's the prob.
If IMAPI.EXE isn't Running (when it should be), then the Built-in
CD Burning thingy in WinXP won't (& can't) work.
Normally, it is Set to "Manual" (or "OnDemand"), which means that
it is Started when it's needed.
All you have to do now, is to suss out *why* it isn't Running.
Something is stopping it (it's **trying* to Start, obviously,
from what that Event Log Entry says, but then it *Fails* to Start,
cos "Access is Denied")
Notice that it doesn't say that it couldn't Find the File,
(or that the File/Path doesn't exist) so that isn't the prob.
It's Found the File & tried to Run (Start) it, but then
"Access is denied".
Something is Blocking it.
When you have found out what is stopping it & why, then you can
make it Fixted.
:-)
It sounds like it *might* be some prob with the NTFS File Permissions,
but that's not really very likely.
I reckon it's far more likely to be something like your Firewall.
That can be Set to Block stuff from being Run (&/or to Block things
from Launching other things)
So have a good look through the various Rules & Options, in the
Firewall Settings to see if any of them are stopping the IMAPI.EXE
File from being Run, or stopping the thing that Launches it from
Launching it.
It's Run (Launched) by SERVICES.EXE (With the User Credentials of:
NT Authority\System)
So it's basically allowed (by windoze) to do what it wants.
But 3rd Party things such as Firewalls, which have "Behaviour
Blocking" Rules can stop it from Running.
If SERVICES.EXE was Blocked from Launching things in your Firewall,
then a whole load of *other* things also wouldn't work, so I would
be looking at just what is causing the File IMAPI.EXE being Blocked
from Starting.
