oh. Okay then I still have half a bale of hay so lets clutch another
straw :-)

What happens ..with no blank cd in the drive, if you right click a
file ? Do you get an option to send it to the cd rw drive? and if
you choose that, does the balloon thingy pop up to say you have
files ready to be written to cd and you can click the balloon to see
them?

Yep it does that OK. Does it when there is a disk in too it's only
when I go to *write this file to CD* it tells me there is not disk or
it's full. One other thing that may be relevant is if the CD already
has folders on it and thus has a name, when I click on burn to disk,
the wizards thinks it's a new disk, i.e. it gives it today's date as
the title.

okay, lol more questions :-)
Anything in your event viewer that says summat didn't do what was
expected?
What make/model is the cd/dvd rewriter? If you set the imapi service to
run on auto ( or manual) and rebooted as pmj suggested then I am puzzled,
maybe its something to do with the hardware ?
I really have no idea what the problem can be , but maybe I can help by
doing a bit of Googling and see if I come up with anything different from
what you have probably already found. Perhaps there is a more recent
driver for it or its a known ( to the rest of the world , but not us LOL)
problem
