One.

Since I'm a telewest customer, it seemed easier to use
news.blueyonder.co.uk as the news server that freeagent
needs to download usenet messages.

Maybe...

But a *better* one to use would be:

text.news.blueyonder.co.uk
or
news-text.blueyonder.co.uk

They actually both point to the same IP Address, which is:
195.188.240.200

It's a *text only* News Server (which doesn't carry Binary
NewsGroups), so the Retention is much better on it.
<snip>
Will put it to use & report back.........

Feedback time.

Not yet tried lap-top to modem connections, soon promise.......

As for the other blueyonder news servers, total disaster!

They tired to send me 179,000+ headers but they were nearly all
unavailable!

Yes.
But you would have to *ReSet* the Newsgroup, in your Newsreader, surely?

Cos the Headers of the Messages (in particular the "Xref: " Header,
which has the Article Number (as opposed to the "Message-ID: ") in it
will be different on each News Server, so if you change the Name of
the News Server, in the Account Properties in your News Client
(rather than Setting up a new Server in your News Client), then it is
likely to get a bit Confuzzled.

So, deleted news-text.blueyonder.co.uk from Free Agent & re-inserted
new.blueyonder.co.uk.

Apparently the Blueyonder/Telewest *Binary* News Server doesn't have
anywhere near as good Retention Rates on the Messags as the Text Only
News Servers (I don't use binary Newsgroups, so I can't say how I find
it is).

Try the Text Only one again?
But either Set it up as a *Separte* news Account in your News Client,
or ReSet the account, making sure to Delete all the existing Headers
& Messages.

At the moment they have over 180,000 messages in the UPSS Newsgroup
Going back nearly a Year!

here's an extract from the NNTP Log file, saved by my newsreader,
which show the Commands it has issued to & the Responses from,
the News Server...

<quote>
NNTP Log started at 02/08/2006 20:19:29
NNTP: 20:19:29 [db] Connecting to 'nntp.server' on port 119.
NNTP: 20:19:30 [rx] 200 Welcome to the blueyonder text only
Usenet server (Tornado Backend v1.0.4.363)
NNTP: 20:19:30 [tx] MODE READER
NNTP: 20:19:30 [rx] 200 Welcome to the blueyonder text only
Usenet server (Twister v2.1.1.363)
<snip>
NNTP: 20:19:42 [tx] GROUP uk.people.silversurfers
NNTP: 20:19:42 [rx] 211 180201 43253 224067 uk.people.silversurfers
</quote>

See that last Line?
"211" means "OK, Information Follows"
180201 is the (estimated) Number of Articles available
43253 is the Article Number (as in the "xref: " Header) of the
earliest available Article
& 224067 is the Number of the latest Article they have available

(yours, which this is in Reply to, is Article Number 224056)

&...
224067 - 43253 = 180814

The difference between the 2 Figures (180814 & 180201) is 613,
which is down to internal Losses & numbering Errors & things like
that on the News Server. (or may also be due to spam Messages -
some of which enter their System, as opposed to being Rejected
straight away, but then get Filtered out Internally.

But over 180,000 Messages in a Newsgroup isn't bad & is a lot more
than many other News Servers have!

<snip>
So, new Q?

Any other reccomended (Free) news servers & readers out there?

How about NIN (News Individual.Net) ?
But they aren't Free - it costs 10 Euros Per Year (about 7 Quid)
