Is this using WinXP?
Or WinMe?
Or w98?
All of them use a basically similar way of handling things, but they
all differ slightly in what features are available & how to get to the
various choices.

Good point!!!
There *are* some though, so yes, it will really depend on what
particular File Extension uker is talking about.
It will be interesting to see which File Extension(s) he is having
this prob with?
What Choices are available depends on what is Set in the Registry.
In the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT Key (Which is actually an Alias for the Key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes), there are Sub-Keys for each File
Extension & *also* for each File Type - a FileType can be Associated
with more than one File Extension.
There are also various other SubKeys, for things such as "All File
Extensions" (*) & Unknown File Types, as well as various other File
System Objects.
The Contents of those SubKeys can have a whole range of different
Values (& further SubKeys), which decides what Options are (or are not)
available in the various Dialog Boxes.
In particular the "EditFlags" Value controls what Tick Boxes are
available (or Greyed out) (& whether or not they are Set) - See M$DN
Article(s) below...
As well as using the normal "OpenWith" Box, you can also use the
[Change..] or [Advanced...] Buttons to Set up File Associations.
It may be worth doing it that way?
For some more Info about it, have a look on the M$DN (micro$oft
Developers Network) Site at Articles such as these...
