The point is, that (with WinXP) it makes it *very* much easier to do
any sort of Sharing of Files & Folders (& Drives) & Printers etc,
on any sort of LAN (Local Area Network), which is what you have,
when you are using (as you are) a Router to Connect to the Internet -
it doesn't matter whether it uses WiFi or just a Cable (Ethernet)
Connection.
w98 did things a bit differently - but when WinXP is involved, then
if you don't have all the various User Accounts & Access Rights etc,
Set up properly, it can cause probs.
& yes, any form of Personal (Desktop) Firewall Software (either on
the actual Desktop PC or on the Laptop! - for these purposes the
description "Desktop Firewall" applies equally to a Laptop/Notebook
Computer!) can also block the Sharing stuff, but that's just a mnatter
of Setting up the righ tFirewall Rules to allow the stuff.

Well, just read through it again?
:-)
It really is quite straightforwards...
Think about the processes (stages) that are involved, when you Switch
on the PC & Boot it Up.
Then try Opening TaskManager & looking at the "Users" Tab - see what
it says there.
& look at the System Properties - WinKey + Pause/Break, or RightClick
My Computer>Properties & Switch to the Advanced Tab.
Look in the Section labelled "User Profiles"
& Click [Settings...]
Those sort of thinsg (as well as the User Accounts Control Panel Applet
& the "userpasswords2" thing available from the Start>Run Box...
Start>Run userpasswords2 [OK]
Will all show you a fair bit of Information about the various User
Accounts that any WinXP Machine has.
Even if you don't *consciously* "Log on", when you start the Machine,
you *are* actually "Logging on", using your User Account to windoze.
So, to be able to access stuff on the Machine (especially from another
Machine), then it follows that you would *have* to supply the correct
UserName & passWord Details, doesn't it?
Otherwise *anybody*, anywhere in the world, (via the Internet) would
be able to access the Machine!
