No, I have used System Commander for years (it's on a floppy yet!) and
it's not complex, he said in his summary that he wants 2 x
installations of W98 and it's an easy way to achieve that. It manages
everything from DOS via W9x to the NT branch and Linux. It also adds an
option to boot from floppy/CD or any HD partition, it would certainly
make life a lot easier to achieve what Hawkeye is after without going
into the BIOS or switching active partitions. I couldn't have set up my
dual boot (DOS/W98) PC without it.

I think it's the easiest way to get to what he wants - 2 x
installations of W98.

It would be much easier to buy a new PC with an OS installed but look
at his post - that's not what he wants :-)

Well, I'm sure he can decide exactly how many, that's up to him :-)

That doesn't achieve what he wants, without a boot manager anyway. 2 x
bootable installations of W98 are going to need 2 x primary partitions.
If he uses a boot manager then he doesn't need any additional primary
partitions, but he can't put XP into the new primary partition if he
wants 2 x W98 installs without a boot manager, XP can go anywhere.

OK, but without a boot manager he is going to need to be able to switch
active partitions to boot separate W98 installs.

That's true of NT/Linux but not W98 because msdos.sys sits in the
primary partition and you can only have one copy (again a boot manger
would deal with that by copying files around depending on the menu
option chosen).

Well I was hoping it would put something on the screen that he could
read and give him some options :-) Mine certainly does, but as I said
it needs to be tried.

It's what Hawkeye said he wants, I'm trying to stick to his
specification :-)

No, if he uses the primary partition on the new HD for XP then his
chance to install a second W98 is lost, unless he uses a boot manager
which would make it a heck of a lot easier. He could have several W98
installs and even a plain DOS install with a Boot manager. He could
even try Linux if he gets adventurous!

No problems but I don't think he will achieve what he has said he wants
to if he puts XP on the primary partition of the new HD, without a boot
manager, he needs that partition for W98. He wants to compare a fresh
install of W98 with his current one to see what difference 4 years of
crud makes :-)

If he decides that he can't face the pain of 2 x W98 installs after
reading this then there are much simpler options, it's the dual W98
installs that need to be thought through, once that's done XP will be a
doddle :-)
