I find that Skype [*1]
http://skype.com/
seems to be (for me) a much better bet these days, for keeping in
touch with people.
It does IM - Instant Messaging - type stuff, just the same as
M$N Messenger, Google Talk, AOL AIM, ICQ, Yahoo IM & all the umpteen
other IM things, but it also does VoIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol)
much easier than M$N etc. & integrates with (& works like) the Phone
System much better...
With Skype, you can Call anybody else, anywhere in the world either
directly, if they are using Skype, or if they don't, you can Call
them on their Phone Number & you can also be Contacted *from* an
ordinary (LandLine or Mobile) Phone as well.
& it also has a VoiceMail thing, which is handy if the other person
(or you) doesn't happen to be around just when you (or they) are.
I haven't actually used M$N Messenger for well over a year now.
So I've not kept up with all the fancy "Nudges" & "Winks" & "Animated
Emoticons" etc, that M$N Messenger seems to go in for these days.

I'm not sure how the recent purchase of Skype by eBay will affect
things.
It seems to be "business as usual" at the mo.
