I think ~~Linda~~ has sussed it!!
It could be that the XP resident Version of Messenger is signing you in
automatically. If it is in the taskbar when you start up Windows. Open it
and go to tools/options and untick the boxes that tell it to start up with
Windows. That should cure it.
