WiFi ADSL Modem Router thingy as a Router for a Cable Modem?

I have a Q which may sound a bit silly...
& it may well have an obvious answer, but I want to find out *before*
I buy one...
I wondered if anybody in here might be able to Help?...
I've Set up quite a few Systems for people who have an ADSL Broadband
Internet Connection, using a normal, standard BT ADSL-Enabled Phone
Line & they use a WiFi ADSL Modem Router thingy - such as one of the
Belkin ones or DLink, 3Com, NetGear or whatever, to get the Internet
Connection to the other computers...
I assume that the *Router* part of them can be used as a ordinary
Router - WiFi or Ethernet - but with a *Cable* Modem, as the Internet
Connection, rather than using the built-in ADSL Modem part for the
Internet Connection.
Am I right in that assumption?
Is it just a question of turning off the ADSL Modem part (or just
not Connecting a Phone Line to it)?
& just bunging the Cable Modem Connection (Ethernet) into it
& then plugging the other Computers into the other Ethernet Ports,
(or Connecting them to it via the WiFi stuff)?
The reason I ask is that I have a (Telewest) Cable Modem & I'm thinking
of getting a WiFi Router to use with it, (since this New Fancy Flash
Medion PC that I have has a WiFi thingy in it), but since a WiFi Router
with an ADSL Modem in it is not much more expensive than just a WiFi
Router, I thought I'd get one of those, then if I ever decided to ditch
the Telewest Line & get a BT Line I could then use the same thing for
an ADSL Connection.
