I vaguely remember 'keys' as an alternative to 'barleys'. I guess we are
of a generation when real mobility in the population of the UK was
beginning and in every part of the country there would be a small number
of 'incoming' kids with slightly different traditions. Also the spread
of television in the '50's probably helped to increase the tendency to a
kind of increasing 'universality' amongst children's games and customs.
