I wonder if it's the Messenger service, I had some spam via that until
I turned it off. In XP:

Start Menu | All Programs | Administrative Tools | Services.

Scroll down to the 'Messenger' service and see if it's running. If so
stop it and set it to disabled.

It's not Windows Messenger, it's a service that allows messages to be
sent across networks and works over the Internet, which is why spammers
use it.

Alternatively has she clicked on any links in a Russian spam email? Do
you know if she runs a firewall and AdAware, SpyBot etc.?
