I can't really do that, cos I dunno what came with the previous ALDI
Medion offer (the 799 one) - I have the one before that (the 699 one).

There are several bits that this latest one (the 499 one) doesn't
have...
But I reckon those bits wouldn't be missed (or needed) by most people.

& (from what you've said in the past) I don't reckon there's anything
missing from it that you would really need (or want).

It doesn't seem to have any WiFi?
But it does come with a DVB (Digital) TV Tuner Card & also an Analogue
TV/FM Radio Tuner thingy.
& it comes with PVR (Personal Video Recorder) Software & Remote Control,
so you can use it like a TV/Radio & Video Recorder - but you've already
said that you don't want to use any of that.

It's got a Multi Card Reader (for Camera type Memory Cards), as well
as 6 USB Ports & 2 Firewire Ports & a built-in LAN (Ethernet) NIC thing.

It doesn't seem to have a SIM Card Reader though?

The Graphics Card is an NVidia GeForce 256MB [*1] PCI eXpress which
seems OK - far better than anything you need for any of what you use
your PC for - you don't play all the latest Games on your PC, do you?

[*1]
Even though, in the small Print at the bottom of that Page, it says
that the "TurboCache (TM) Technology" means that it's actually only(?!)
a 128MB Graphics Card & the other 128MB is Dynamically shared with the
System Memory, as & when it's needed.

I would recommend it (subject to a few provisos).
Bear in mind that it doesn't have a Monitor with it (but you have
recently bought a TFT LCD Monitor, haven't you? - So that doesn't
really matter)

But there *are* actually Machines around for 499 that *do* include
a Monitor, though they aren't as well specified in other areas.

>... Is 512 DDR enough for instance,

It's plenty enough for most people.
& if you wanted more, you can easily get more RAM - that Machine will
take up to 2 GB of RAM, if you wanted it.

>... is DDR really twice as fast or is it all sales talk?

DDR RAM *isn't* "twice as fast" - "twice as fast" as what, anyway?

DDR stands for "Double Data Rate" - & that doesn't mean that the
whole thing is twice as fast (as anything) it just means that in most
circumstances, it's faster (& more efficient) than stuff which isn't
DDR.

You could try having a look on the Medion Site?

The previous ALDI Medion Offers have had Links to the fuller details
on the Medion Website, though (with just a quick look just now)
I couldn't see any Info about this one on the Medion Website.

But anyway, I have yet to see any Medion PC that *doesn't* come with
a proper, (OEM) WinXP Install CD.

& They *also* come with a "Factory Recovery" CD

& (in addition to that) they come with a (large!) Hard Disk, that
is already Partitioned & which has the "Factory Recovery" Image Files
on it.

& cos the Hard Disk is already Partitioned, that means that you can
use the (built-in) WinXP Disk Management Utility to chop & change
& Re-Arrange the Partitions, if you want to. (The main obstacle for
people Partitioning a System is usually cos they only start off with
only one, single Partition - & it's the *first* step, from one to more
than one Partion, that is the most problematical.

Besides, you can also (cos it comes with a Factory Recovery thing) use
the WinXP Install CD to wipe the Disk & Partitions & create new
Partitions as well - & then you can use the "Factory Recovery" thing
to put the original Operating System (& all the Applications) back,
onto one of the New Partitions, then yo ucan Install (any number of)
extra Installations, if you want to.

> again?

You can *always* "hold off" buying a PC!!!
There will *always* be a better &/or Cheaper PC available!!!

But if you keep "holding off", even when there's a good value one like
this, you will never get one!

>... Any advice welcome, I'm seriously in the market.

See above.
