We have an Angelcare baby monitor. The power adaptor connector has

Does anyone know if we would be ok using an off-the-shelf 9V power
adaptor like the ones you can buy at Argos or Maplins?
I don't want to break the unit as it isn't cheap!

Power adaptor - a plug-in transformer with a lead to the monitor gizmo? If so, and it's unreliable, it's as good as broken! Look at where the wire flexes most, strip the insulation very locally to see whether you can find a break, solder the thing back together (or replace the wire), wrap it up well with insulating tape, done.

uk.d-i-y may be helpful.
